Rebooting DS9

Sacrilege I know to even consider, but it’s meant just as a little fun :bolian:

How might you have considered rebooting DS9? There are loads of ways the show and characters could have gone, what would you have changed to make things a little different over the shows run?

For me, I'd have loved to have seen the station under it's original premise, a much older facility used by several races over the years, added to and altered, giving it a more mish-mash feel for the Starfleeters to have to deal with. It'd also allow for some interesting stories about the base itself and the long, mysterious past (as well as what might have been left undiscovered/forgotten within).

Character-wise, as much as I like Ro, I think Kira was a better addition, giving a totally different perspective and objective to the typical Starfleet mentality. Sisko wouldn't change (except maybe give him the goatee from the beginning), though I think it'd have been interesting to switch Jake's gender, to give Sisko a little something more to worry about--especially the friendship with Nog and how that would develop with a hew-mon female. I'd have added a little more with the O'Brien family, looking at the strains of the new assignment on their family, he of course would still have to deal with all the crap the universe can throw at him. Quark would forever be Quark. Odo I'd like to have seen as more of a private investigator, further isolating himself from the rest of the population, though still a close friend of Kira's (who is always willing to fight his corner). This would see a new Security Chief, though I'm not sure if I'd go Starfleet or Militia as both have their own benefits and drawbacks. Bashir wouldn't change much, still the cocky and somewhat-arrogant rookie who becomes more seasoned and level-headed over time. Dax would start off as her more adventurous self, embracing all that life has to offer and cracking off one-liners. I'd also like to see Pazlar added, though now as Counsellor (I'm tempted to switch their gender as well), seeing as how Sisko would have problems to overcome, as well as being a cultural expert who can help study the station.

I would not do much to the main characters as it would mostly seem like shuffling the deck chairs. If people wouldn't mind violating the continuity of Trek overall, I'd say start O'Brien and (a non-cerebral) Dax as newlyweds: their marriage can be an organic and ongoing part of the story.

I would like to have seen more of Kai Opaka and more of Jaro Essa. I think part of the problem of Bajoran politics is that the list of Bajoran politicians was itself not stable. One more season of Opaka I believe would have kept the audience more involved. A strong adversary for Opaka would have helped create dynamics with Bajoran politics for Sisko to contend with.

Moar Frank Langella is always a good thing. Odo as a non-governmental agent would help to create more tension and mistrust after the Founders reveal.

I don't think there is much I would change really I liked pretty much all the characters and they all had their usage, I would be tempted to add a few characters though, primarily the fact that the crew of the station do so much exploration of the Gamma quadrant without any "security" presence particularly from season 3 onwards with the dominion so I would have some actual reoccurring starfleet security on the station for "starfleet" reasons be it a special forces type security squad (navy seal esc) or maybe even a marine detachment (it would make sense certainly at the start of the "war" with either Klingons or Dominion that Starfleet Garrison security more).

Other than that it would be fairly minor things such as leaving Kira on the station more often (I was watching some episodes the other day and realised for a none starfleet personnel she spends too much time on the Defiant) she is the XO of the station most of the time when Sisko goes off on the Defiant he should have left Kira in charge of the station unless there is a specific reason for it.

I like a lot of the ideas presented thus far, particularly the idea of making Jake's character a female (which really would make the friendship with Nog more interesting).

A big adjustment I'd make would be to have a starship assigned to the station from the get-go. The idea that Starfleet would leave any outpost so completely defenseless -- regardless of how old it is or how distant it is from the Federation -- is preposterous.

Another big change I'd make would be to focus more on the military and political arcs. These guys are on a station, which -- unless you're one of the ones that liked watching the crew hang out at Vic's -- is the perfect setting to explore those matters in greater depth.

Some small changes I'd make:
Get rid of the whole Pahwraith/Dukat possession
Let Bashir be brilliant without genetic modification.
No Section 31
No Vic Fontaine
Keep Kai Opaka

Opaka was bland in the show, received more profile in the novels. She never had the chance to add much to the storyline. I hardly miss her, but that's not the character's/actress' fault
I agree about Dukat - no Pah Wraith
More about Kira
Ro as recurring guest
Keiko less patronizing, no Kira as surrogate mother
Only one Dax, keep Ezri, but Tigan, not Dax
More Weyoun and Damar episodes
Dukat not as Anjohl
No counselors. Garak would agree.

Reboot DS9 ... simple, just rename it BABYLON 5. Or was that the other way around.

(Kidding ... kidding ... put down the phasers, guys. Or is it the PPGs?)
