Reality Affliction

Can you think of a movie, that when it came out, it actually affected reality in some way.

For example; Jaws. I remember when Jaws came out. I lived, still live, in San Diego. And when that movie came out, that entire summer, people were affraid to go swimming. In fact, I haven't been in the ocean above my ankles SINCE that movie came out; and I'm serious.

I also remember when Close Encounters came out, there was a rush of UFO sightings, more than usual, for the immediate months after it came out.

JFK, when it came out, really generated a 'rash' of JFK documentaries and speculation about his death. It was watercooler talk for quite some time.

What abouit you? Can you think of a movie that afflicted reality in such ways? I mean, hukkuna-matatta became everyone's catch phrase for Christ's sake!!

Jaws, JFK - this seems to cover a broader spectrum than just sci-fi movies. It's liable to get more attention across that spectrum in the GTVM forum.

Jaws also lead to a huge increase in a global hunt on sharks and leading to some of the species becoming endangered. And these days finding a great white above 18 feet is a rarity. Hopefully all the cool 'air jaws' tv shows and shark tourism will reverse some of this.

Some other examples:

Natural Born Killers: apparently it served as an inspiration to the Columbine killers.

Braveheart: has inspired part of the political movement for the independence of Scotland.

Passion of the Christ: did lead one movie goer to confess for a crime and turn himself in.

Fight Club: inspired some real fight clubs to be formed across the country.

Wow...all great examples. We just had a FIGHT CLUB broken up over here in USA recently....

And the hunt against sharks is one of the reasons Spielberg seems to feel bad about making the movie now..

I also think when THE VOYAGE HOME came out, it inspired a shortlived save the whale fad for a while..
