Real Steel

Eh, it's been out for a couple of weeks.

I dunno though it's like, it's not a very happy ending is it. Yeah they bonded and stuff but they're still going to be separated. I just thought it was a bit weird, like with Rocky the fight was the main thing, so ending it with him being cheered was fine. But this had the family thing as well and it's like they just kinda skipped over that bit.

So I guess in the third one there's going to be some berserker robot, but that robot designer guy will help Atom (also, I thought he was called Adam for ages). Then in 4 he'll fight a Russian robot, 5 Hugh Jackman will train a newcomer, but then his head gets turned by the big leagues. Then their robots fight in the street.

Then 20 or so years later Atom will be all rusty but he'll have one more fight :D

(I kinda wanted Atom to get broken in half so the commentators could have said "OH MY GOD ZEUS JUST SPLIT THE ATOM!")

So spoilers don't count after a mere two weeks?

Dude, not everybody goes and sees a movie the minute it comes out. Or reads the latest book the day it hits the stands . . . .

I mean, it's not like we're talking some venerable screen classic that came out ten years ago.

Or the alternate universe where Atom becomes self aware and creates Skynet.

It's been out two weeks so people should assume that in a discussion thread about the movie there will be discussion about the movie.

I mean, The Walking Dead started last week, I haven't seen the episode yet so I wouldn't go into the thread then be annoyed that people weren't spoiler coding everything.

Same with Terra Nova, I haven't seen the fourth episode yet so I'm not going into that thread because I know people will be talking about things that happened that episode.

In fact, I didn't come into this thread until I'd seen the movie.

I also wouldn't go reading through every post for a thread of a movie I hadn't seen. Amd then moan that there might be some spoilers around.

There's nothing wrong with a spoiler code, but just saying

Using spoiler code can interrupt the flow of a conversation and really just be a bit of a pain in the ass to use. It was much better, and easier, to use back in the days when it was just a black line you had to chose to highlight but the last couple versions of this board has made it bit more of a pain in the ass to both type and to read.

Anyway, while it's not stated in the thread's title it is pretty much implied, or should be expected, that people discussing a show or movie are going to spill some spoilers out there. Maybe some "spoiler space" could have been called for but, really, with a movie like this does it really matter?

I mean, it's not like anything said here is going to be a huge spoiler in a popcorn movie about fighting robots.

Here's a question to folk, forgive the Transformers line, but do you think there was more to Atom than meets the eye?

They kept hinting throughout that perhaps there was a ickling of consciousness inside him. But it was never really explored fully, you could also easily just say he was nothing more than a machine. Thoughts? Maybe something for the possible sequel?

I don't think there was anything "more" to Atom, or any of the other robots in the movie. It was pretty clear that the robots were all just that: machines. Machines that didn't function on their own and only moved by either some form of remote or mimicking the movements of someone. (Atom's "sparring mode.")

Atom had no meaningful AI.

The kid, having lost his mother, was just looking someone to imprint with as he was obviously getting nothing from his father and the robot was as good as anybody.

The movie probably could have been made a bit better if Atom had be lost or destroyed in the final fight and the kid no longer cared about the meaningless machine since he had finally bonded with his father.

I think they leave it ambiguous, you can read more into it if you want to and not necessarily be wrong.

Took my nephew to see it and I thought it was decent. The family movie stuff was routine but executed very well. If it's going to be cliche at least do it well.

I thought the FX were fine but I saw it in IMAX so maybe me ears bleeding and ringing gave the impacts a bit more oomph. :)

They kind of got the final bit of the TZ Steel in there in their own way.

I did think some of the money figures didn't quite make sense but that's a minor nitpick.

Yeah, the money didn't make much sense, this movie takes place a few years in the future and it seems that then a new fighting robot costs as much as an average car does today (respective to our different economies.)
