Real Steel

Yeah, this is one of those where you just have to wonder "Why?" Who thought this would be a cool idea?

Richard Matheson wrote the book steel which the movie is based after. this is the same guy who wrote I am legend and what dreams may come?

And Somewhere In Time and The Incredible Shrinking Man and Hell House and Duel and "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" and "Enemy Within" and the original Kolchak tv-movies, among many others.

The main reason it was probably made is because of the current popularity of MMA and UFC fights...the robots in the trailer are not just boxing. I'm curious to see how different the main thrust of the plot is compared to the original story from TZ.

Edit: I watched the official trailer for the first time...it seems that the human isn't fighting at all, he's in control of an inferior sparring robot, probably because his got destroyed in a fight.

RAMA

I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the upcoming Hungry Hungry Hippos movie, based on a short story by Richard Matheson from 1958 about a perilous journey down the rivers of East Africa in search of giant pearls guarded by multicolored hippopotamuses controlled by deranged children.

Only the most incredible parts of this story are true.

I just wished we actually had these robots in real life it would be awesome.
hell I would pay for ppv. it would blow the wwe away. and you know it.

Well, glad there will be many of you out there with me at the theater loving the stupid this movie offers.

The idea was intriguing when I first heard it, but the trailer is making it look like a Wonderful World of Disney flick with a little bit more violence.

Were we to actually have robots in society, people would use them in this way and it would be a huge money maker in the underground (probably on TV too).

Well, BattleBots didn't last on TV for very long. (Okay, actually RC mechanisms and not true robots, but I think the point holds.)

^ It's a remake of a 50-year-old Twilight Zone episode. How original could it be?

That was one of my favorite TZ episodes, starring Lee Marvin. Though I think it's safe to say that it's loosely based on that episode, which was based on Richard Matheson's short story.

Just heard from Richard's agent. Apparently, the folks at Disney/Dreamworks were nice enough to arrange an advance screening for Richard, who really liked the movie.

That's the first thing I thought of as well when I saw the ad for it today.
Hell, the name of that episode is "Steel", so they didn't have to put too much into the title either. :D
