Reading order - any pitfalls to avoid

Lynx, the thing about Memory Beta is that if you notice a mistake, you can fix it yourself! Just put an explanation for your change in the notes field.

I'll take a look at that. I hadn't seen their timeline before yesterday so I don't want to dabble with it before I've studied it more closer.

I just finished the Mission Gamma series and will be spending the next couple of days catching up with the SCE stories that are concurrent with it. So now I'm only about 6 years behind in my reading and I'm stunned to see that I've still got nearly 100 titles to go to be caught up. Now I recall one of the reasons I stopped reading these.

However, I have to say that overall I'm finding the books to be very entertaining and possibly of higher quality than the ones that contributed to my stopping. If the remaining six years worth of books stay this good, then I'll be very glad I decided to catch up.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to be "caught up." (OK, I suppose I kinda understand as I used to have that too) but look at it this way, the books aren't going anywhere, and if you like them then the number of them shouldn't be off-putting, it should be encouraging (knowing that you will seemingly never run out of good literature.) Besides let me tell you, (both from experience and from what I've seen here) being caught up is WAY overrated, because once you are all caught up you'll hate the delays between books, however natural those delays may be. :)

I agree! I love finding a new TV series, or author that I can watch/read the back catalogue of. It's always a sad moment when I know there's no more until some new stuff is produced!

At least with Star Trek the catch-up process takes so much longer :techman:

Yeah, it's a strange compulsion.

Back in the day I was always about half-a-dozen books behind. That was nice because I always had a new book waiting for me and whenever I had a little time off I could sit down and go through them over the course of a few days. But seeing such a huge pile makes me feel like I've really got to attack them or I'll get distracted by something else and never get around to them. I'd like to get back to the more comfortable half-a-dozen-pending stage. And my goal is to get there by the end of the year - no particular reason, but it just seems like a good time frame.

What LightningStorm says is true. By the end of 2008, not counting reprints and the like, there will be about 601 published Star Trek novels, contained therein appx 938 individual stories. Those are going to be around either in ebook form, at libraries, or as treasured finds on the dusty back shelves of used book stores around the globe. Taken in that context, and considering the new ones coming out all the time, you won't be lacking in reading for quite some time.

That being said, I say, make an attempt at getting caught up with the books which have been published since 2000 or so. Especially if you frequent these geekily hallowed electronic walls. The books aren't really going anywhere, but there is something to be said about zeitgeist and the excitement and camaraderie felt by those commonly riding the wavefront of the current narrative. There's cool stuff happening lately and it's fun to be a part of the buzz.

Yes, avoiding spoilers is a motivation. I've seen lots of things posted at the various sci-fi sites over the years that I've just had to skim over or skip entirely for fear of having something spoiled. And yes, being able to talk about the latest books with others would be nice.

But then there's also bragging rights. I mean, come on, going to my neighborhood bar and proudly proclaiming, "I've read ever Star Trek novel ever published!" is bound to get me tons of dates, right? Right? ;)

It is fun to watch them chronologically once you've seen them all. (If watching Hayden Christensen can ever be categorized as "fun.") But that's not the same at all as first time viewing.

I really think the best order to view the Star Wars movies in is:

IV, V, VI, I, II, III, IV, V, VI

(Just because viewing them the second time after the prequel trilogy paints things in a different light.)

Back to Star Trek: Publication order is definitely the way to go. :)
Personally, I've always preferred to watch the Star Wars Saga in this order:

IV, I, II, V, III, VI
I mean, think about it...:)
