Re-evaluating Wesley Crusher

Wesley's great I think they could continue the character easily. Will Wheaton knows so much Trek I'd be interested where he would want that character to go if he ever came back.

I never disliked the character except for when he joined in on bashing Barclay

When Wesley told Lore, "You will come to find out that a starship has many rules and regulations that need to be followed," while smiling smugly...ugh, so condescending.

I really liked him until Starfleet academy. From that point he was pretty intolerable.

After reading the previous posts, I can't help but imagine a scene between Bashir and Wesley. Bashir tells Wesley of the existence of Section 31, only to be smugly admonished: 'We're with Starfleet, we don't lie.'

While I still don't like the Wonder Boy approach, it seems most series had a main cast character that was destined for Greater Things. TNG had Wesley, DS9 had Sisko, and VOY had Kes (can't recall a main cast member from TOS or ENT), so it's not as if that in itself would be a problem. And even though I can understand some people wouldn't like how his character evolved, from the impossibly bright brat to the troubled teenager I think the way they treated his character got more realistic and better over the years.

I mean Wesley was obnoxious in Season 1. But pretty much everybody was not that good in Season 1. Then in Season 2 his presence was a bit awkward, since his mother wasn't even on the ship anymore.
And after that he just kinda floats in and out of the series and honestly doesn't leave that much impression on me and I honestly don't like the Traveller stuff they did with him later on.

He wasn't bad in his interactions with the little boy who lost his mother in "The Bonding".
And I once that they originally considered making Wesley the secret love child of Picard and Beverley, that would have given the character some much needed point and pathos, so it's a pity they never did that.

I don't get the hate either, but he's also not my favorite character.

Sums up my feelings. I don't have strong feelings on him, either way. Yes, everyone was kind of corny in season 1. Otherwise, he gets a shrug from me, but not hate.

To me, it's the opposite. Being roughy the same age as the character on original airing, I loved that the kid got to show the adults he wasn't worthless, and in some areas, knew better than the adults.

Now I think he's a sheltered, prude, whiney little snip.

^Re: Wesley seeming sheltered, Jake is arguably also spoiled (hard for a young person to not come off that way when Federation does seem like a utopia), I think a lot of people preferred him because, not wanting to join Starfleet, he seemed less pompous in that regard (though Wesley did leave Starfleet but he left in a jerky way).

I was just a wee lad when the show started. So to me, Wesley was one of the grown-ups!

Wesley Crusher.... It's been many, many years since I visited the first two seasons apart from few classic episodes. I don't remember if he was annoying?

During seasons 3 and 4 he was alright.

Only when he commanded and saved the whole ship cause everyone was super-drunk, but that episode had all kinds of problems XD
