Re-doing Enterprise

The main thing I'd do is make it clear it's a alternate reality created through temporal incursions, in fact that's the only way the stake of season 3, the Earth being in peril, could possibly work.
Give Hoshi and Mayweather something more to do, maybe Mayweather could have joined the Maco's, Hoshi being a prodigy was fine but perhaps she could have had something else to open doors like show an interest in archaeology.

If I could redo Enterprise:
-I would name the ship Phoenix.
-The show would be have the name Star Trek from jump.
-The captain would be Latino.
-First officer would be a Black woman.
-Likely an all human crew (at least at first) to focus on the "human adventure".
-Include a Stiles among the crew.
-No Temporal Cold War.
-No Earth Starfleet. It would be something like UESPA or United Earth Navy.
-No Klingons.
-I would've replaced Klaang with Shran in the pilot. The Andorians would be an early antagonist species/empire for United Earth. And over the course of the show they become allies. The Romulans would be trying to destabilize the Andorian Empire, not the Klingons.
-Make more use of the Nausicaans as heavies.
-The Romulans would be the big villains from jump. They would be behind the scenes, working through proxies. Would build up the Romulan War. But might show the war as two hour movie or a miniseries midway through the series and then switch to the postwar years.
-Not sure I would've had as antagonistic relationship between the Vulcans and humans. And if I did the humans would be proven or shown wrong as much as they were shown right.
-No transporters.
-Use laser pistols.
-As for ENT crew (if I kept them):
-T'Pol would not be an official member of the crew. She would be a diplomatic officer.
-Reed would be a MACO from jump. Also play up his Section 31 ties earlier on.
-Mayweather would perhaps be a bit older, weathered, and a valued member of the crew that the captain often consulted.
-Trip, would mostly leave alone.
-Phlox, would mostly leave alone.
-Hoshi, would incorporate her martial arts skills earlier on.
-Maybe a love triangle between Mayweather-Sato-Reed.

I would definitely dispense with the adolescent games Trip plays with T'Pol like: "Say that you want me on board, say it, say it!"

"Gotcha, I was coming anyway!"

When I hear dialogues like that I feel embarrassed to be the one watching.

In no order:

1. Ditch the theme song, of course. Keep the montage w an instrumental.
2. Make Archer less of an unprofessional, grumpy hothead.
3. No adolescent rubdowns or tight outfits.
4. Its ok for the Vulcans and Humans to be wary of each other but they don't have to be so speciest and hostile. Tone that down.
5. No time-travel until the show matures...if at all.
6. No retconning shit (borg & ferengi)
7. More development of Malcolm, Hoshi & Travis (recast Travis w a better actor)
8. Less action, more drama
9. The 1st two seasons should be heavy character development episodes w episodes rotating between the main characters
10. Make T'Pol more mature and less of a spaz
11. More recurring female characters
12. More Shran
13. More developing Tellerites, Andorians, & Orions
14. Fewer Klingons
15. Fewer episodes that are obvious tropes (the odd couple episode, the enemies forced to survive together episode, the 7 Samurai episode etc.)
16. Fewer episodes that are obviously rewritten VOY or TNG episodes
17. More usage of Phlox as a "outsider" commenting on humans (like Spock, Data and Quark)
18. No characters/cameos from other series
19. No Marines (MACOs)
20. Sexual tension is great for comedy and drama but romance is boring (in fiction)
21. Develop minor characters among the crew
22. Add alien crewmembers in later seasons

If Earth only has four or five starships, is that really a "starfleet?"

Switching to a term other than starfleet would provide a nice separation from the previous series, going with the UE Navy or the Stellar Navy, or the Space Probe Agency would signal that the show isn't just TNG but set earlier (wink wink).

Having it be the Space Probe Agency could help advance/enforce the idea that perhaps it's more of a civilian organization than a military or para-military one.

Going with Stellar Navy on the other hand could have taken the show in more of a more traditional military direction. While it would be impossible to refer to the NX-01 as a non-military ship, being more so would invoke the "age of sail" where Earth is perhaps actively pursuing a policy of growth into the interstellar realm. Instead of just wandering around aimlessly.

:)

Well, another aspect would be patrolling the solar system, and all of Earth's colonies. Create kind of a star patrol, that is responsible for protecting merchant traffic, and colonies impacted by that traffic.

Incorporating civilians would be easy, especially for medical personnel. It would be easier to have the captains, pilots, and engineering officers be trained at the Academy, but medical personnel only receive basic training to go out and serve.

A bit more wild, but more interesting too.

6. Everyone hates on the borg and ferenghi eps, but they were a blip compared to season 4! The question really should be, was the episode good or not, regardless of the alien of the week.

15. If you're referring to Shuttlepod One, I'm surprised, as it's one of the most liked episodes.

18. ENT didn't actually do that, did it? Well, I guess Spiner was in it, but he's in everything.

A Trek version of the Coast Guard could be interesting.

The Ferengi & Borg eps were both pretty forgettable. The main annoyance for me was that both were "introduced" in a "later" series. Its not fatal, just annoying.

Actually, I was thinking of Precious Cargo....both are good episodes...and both are tropes.

Spiner and the last episode.

Almost all of my complaints are nit-picky in nature but the sheer volume of them says something.

They should have said something about the war with the Romulans.
Disappointed Daniels steering Archer away from that future library book on the race in "Shockwave", ultimately meant nothing.

But there was so much about Enterprise that didn't properly pay off. Could've. Very easily. But didn't. So while I love the show, there's a frustration too. Particularly about the first three seasons, knowing it's all going to have to be wrapped up in the fourth and not everything is going to be satisfactorily addressed. Temporal Cold War? Gone in an admittedly fun pulp sci-fi 2-parter about Nazis winning WWII. Future Guy's goal using the Suliban? Who cares was basically the answer... Not important because by then the plot had switched to Vosk and whatever his unnamed species were. Too many answers were basically kept in reserve, or not even figured out. As if the show might still run 7 years and they'd have plenty of time to come back to it.

Just like Spock says in TMP:

Each of us, at some time in our life, turns to someone, a father, a brother, a god and asks 'Why am I here?' 'What was I meant to be?'

We were hoping for some answers from that show.

We didn't get many.

Personally I enjoyed Enterprise (including the theme tune), but there are a few things I would "tweak".

1) Less advanced weaponry - Keep to plasma weapons and spacial torpedoes. maybe introduce the in a "series 5" (more on that in a bit).

2) No time travel stuff at all - I think the TCW they included was badly done as no one really wanted it there to begin with and did not "care" for it.

3) T'pol should be wearing a Vulcan starship uniform until she resigns and then wears a standard starfleet uniform.

4)The "overall" bad guys would be the Romulans who predict that mankind will become the "new force" in the galaxy and try to undermind humans at every turn and not even reveal this until late in the series.

5) The Xindi stuff would still happen but would be "pushed" by Romulans to do so. We still get MACO's and that whole arc pushes them into trying to find out in series 4 who is behind it all.

6) Shran at some point gets a Dishonourable Discharge from the Andorian Guard and given his military experience becomes the leader of the MACO's with Reed deciding he can't do both jobs splits his role and he stays on as Armour officer but the MACO's fill in as "security"

7) There would be a Series 5 which would detail out the Romulan War with Enterprise looking at "Allies" from their exploration mission to assist in protecting earth and other nearby planets during the war. At this point you could add the upgrades mentioned in point 1, but have them re-fit the ship for war time (so make phase cannon turrets and attach them to the hull of the ship.

8) The series would end with the treaty being signed with Romulus and the "allies" coming together to sign the official starfleet agreement and truly become the United Federation of Planets.

9) Finally pay slightly more attention to continuity (yes they unnecessarily explained the Klingon foreheads but then included the Borg and Ferengi is Archer that bad a reports he forgot to file one?)

...
Outfit-wise she's both the Deanna Troi and the Seven of Nine of ENT.

I am curious: Why do you call it "series 5"?

Because I am not sure it needed a full 7 series run, but I liked series 4 as a whole so I would need to extend it by a series to incorporate the war.
