Re-cast Captain Jonathan Archer

I could see Gary Cole as Archer.

Or Esai Morales.

Or Neal McDonough.

Basically it's gotta be someone who could at least come close to the Adama Look.

Iggy Pop.
The first Vorta Starfleet Captain! :techman: I approve!

Worship fantasy: Connor
Way back when, I remember the idea of having Archer killed on an away mission and Trip take over - T'Pol not being appropriate or refusing or being injured - as an emergency measure that ends up being permanent.

Personally I think Keith Carradine would have been superb and a far better captain.
After seeing him as Wild Bill on Deadwood, I entirely agree! His Deadwood co-star Timothy Olyphant might have been good, too. Tho maybe I'd prefer him as a Romulan. ;)

IMO Scott Bakula did a great job with the material he was given

but if I had to re-cast the role

it would be the actor who brought us Malcolm Reynolds

So much is said of Scott Bakula, but what about the other guys? Maybe it needs it own thread, but I certainly would not of minded someone else in Travis or Malcolm's roles.

I know it's all hypothetical, but rather than going with unrealistic choices (Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford), I'm gonna stick with people who conceivably could have landed the role and would have been within the budgetary range of the show and were big enough draws for the producers to want to hire them (it was obviously hoped that Bakula would carry over some QL goodwill the way that Richard Dean Anderson & Kevin Sorbo brought McGuyver & Hercules kudos to Stargate & Andromeda respectively).

Michael Biehn - such an under-rated actor, a man who should have been an A-lister and who retains a lot of affection with genre fans, thanks to Terminator and Aliens

Mark Hamill - the stir that casting Luke Skywalker as Captain Kirk's predecessor (or successor, depending on how you look at it) would not have harmed viewing figures any

Keith Carradine - he may not have been top of anyone's wishlist, but his role in the show demonstrated how good he could have been in it.

Peter Weller - charismatic in the 4th season and also in 24. His Robocop past would also have been a plus, a la QL.

Eric Roberts - again, may not have topped any wishlists, but Heroes reminded genre fans how capable he can be.

I must say, while I never warmed to Bakula as Archer, I thought he was excellent in the recent Boston Legal ep in which he appeared. That character was obviously better written to his strengths as an actor and performer. He's an engaging and likable actor, but does not have the charisma and leadership air that William Shatner, Patrick Stewart or Avery Brooks had. I hoped from the outset of ENT that he would be replaced in the lead role, but I am really hoping that his BL character returns to the show. And I also hope he gets to sing again - I much prefer his singing voice to his speaking one!

Kyle Chandler from Early Edition. His character there was a bumbling hero, which is great experience for playing Archer.

He was a capable actor in QL, but that was years before Enterprise, and personally I don't think he was capable in that.
Gosh, his career seems to have done just fine -- since ENT he's been in several television performances (prime time) and been picked for a movie with Matt Damon. Sounds like his career is just dandy.

Both Connor, John B and Jolene overcame shitty writing - too many times in my opinion, Scott came across as blank and wooden.
I really disagree. John B overcame some two-dimensional writing. Poor Jolene did her best, but was basically demoted from a Vulcan to Malibu Barbie. Hard to do anything meaningful with that; it's a shame, I think she's a good actress and had been begging for more (even publicly). Connor was good, but I never thought he was a breakaway actor and ... time has proven me correct.
