I'll give this 4 stars simply because there was great humor all the way through.

I give it 3 star because it's a very fine production of a movie I wish they hadn't made--that is a 'light comedy'

No complaints about anything, just wish they had spent all the time, money & tallent on a serious episode.

I have to disagree on that. After the seriousness of TWoK and TSFS, with Kirk losing Spock, his ship and his son, it was time to lighten up. TOS had its share of light comedy episodes (Shore Leave, Tribbles, etc.), and the film series needed the same.

4 stars for me as well. I liked the humor, as it wasn't the silly kind that the TNG movies later had and actually seemed more natural for the characters.

Wow, not 1 person hates this flick.
nimoy made a movie no one hates--I wonder if that's a totally good thing.

It's sort of funny, considering the amount of derision the film usually gets around here. Or maybe that's just the music.

No you can't really hate it in retrospect.
But if you told me in august of 1984 that we wouldn't get another decent action trek movie for 7 years!!!! I might have by ever so slightly annoyed.

Well, I gave it a 2. TVH is a good movie in a lot of respects, but I sometimes think it's overrated. The conservation message is nice, but the movie is way too heavy-handed in delivering it. After all the trouble the crew goes to for the whales, we don't even get a translation of their conversation with the probe. TVH also repeats some of the flaws of TMP, in that we have a Giant Alien Thing threatening Earth, and even though this threat is the main reason for the mission, it's largely ignored in favor of the humor and the protect the whales mantra.

Not bad. I just think the movie could have been better.

i honestly love this movie, its quirky, funny, and just all around entertaining. TWOK was a a better Star Trek movie, but on a scale of all movies they are equal in my book. This movie actually got me interested in Star Trek, a few years ago i was at my friend david's house and he popped it in and i was just so interested in how they have such a weird concept and still achieve success, a month later i was watching tos every day.

4. It's a great, down-to-earth Trek movie (no pun intended). The crew's natural chemistry and fish-out-of-water humor (again, no pun intended). It's a wonderful movie!

One star. It hasn't aged well and the "message" is imparted with all the subtlety of repeated blows to the head with a sledgehammer.
