It is a piece of crap, IMHO. The worst of all trek movies.
3 stars for me.
It's disjointed, but I still think it has some of the best character moments for the big three and that makes it not that bad for me.

On a message board, that's usually where you reply, "So why do you like Star Trek: TFF the best?", or something to that effect.
I love this movie because even though it made missteps, it's heart was firmly in the right place. The best way to get this is to listen to the commentary on the DVD by Bill & Elizabeth Shatner. It's terrific the insights Bill has into how he was doing his movie. You find out that they were so hard pressed for time that things he wanted to change he couldn't, and then they ran out of money for FX shots, or FX shots were never put in place for the movie that were ordered.
The strongest tie for me is the Big Three. This movie has no problems building upon that friendship. I love the camping scenes the most, but the movie overall just exudes warmth and heart. I also think it truly tried to go where most Trek movies didn't. It felt like a classic episode. It didn't just have a ship fight with lots of pretty explosions, it actually tried to go somewhere unknown, to seek a real adventure. I think that William Shatner had a profound understanding of not only Trek, but of the characters that drive the series. I don't think any other movie tried as hard as this one.
Watch the DVD commentary sometime. You'll gain insight into how things worked as they did, and what Bill wanted to do but was constrained from doing. The movie still stands however, as it is, and for me there is no better movie than this one.
