I put Star Trek at number 2, right after Wrath of Khan.
I put Star Trek at number 2, right after Wrath of Khan.
I really enjoyed the film, and since I use a four-star system, I'd give it three and a half because of the occasional flub (like promoting cadets to captain at the drop of a hat).
Quinto is on the mark as Spock, and I thought Pine was good as Kirk. I've seen it twice so far, but I don't think I'll reach my all-time record: 13 times in the theater for The Wrath of Khan. (I LOVED that movie)

The story was weak-ish, I have to agree, but on the other hand; they had all the main characters to introduce, which took major part of the story obviously, as well as explaining Vulcan and Vulcans to possible new fans. Therefore, the story itself was kind of secondary. That said, however, the story was relatively good and IMO, it sets a good basis for more to come. I bet the sequel's storyline is gonna be "da bomb!".

Four out of five stars for me -- it was great fun, I highly recommend it.
Performances and effects were good, story was decent, although I had a few issues with it. Also, it does kind of feel like they're using this film as set-up for future installments, but since it seems likely that we'll get those installments, it doesn't bother me too much.
As for where I'd put it in regards to the other movies... I'm not quite sure yet. I think I'll have to watch it once or twice more before I make that determination. I am certain, however, that I will rank it above all the other odd-numbered films -- and, of course, Nemesis.

I put off going, finally got in to see the show this afternoon (though the IMAX was sold out - I may try to get in again) - My reaction? Had I known what the film would be like before I went in, I wouldn't have been willing to pay $8... I would have been happy to pay $100. 5 STARS.
I couldn't help raising my eyebrows a little, as the film does bounce off the well-beaten path in some regards to traditional and known trek history... but the characters are natural (In my mind I never felt as if I was watching foreign actors); the plot is fresh, whether a dedicated fan or a newcomer is watching; also, the special effects do the NCC-1701 some serious justice (though it's a small shame that we now have continuity problems with the old TV show bridge and this movie's bridge.)
The ABSOLUTE highlight of the film is seeing Leonard Nemoy shine as he does; his role as represented by the new actor is admirable, and the part he plays is absolutely awesome... an outstanding finale to his life as Spock, as we all know him and will remember him. As much as I like Next Generation, I really feel that this film has taken us back to the roots of Star Trek - where the franchise was originally meant to be in the first place.
There is no praise high enough for this film... it is an honor to the show business, and I hope that it plays in theatres for a very long time.
