Rank The Marvel Movies

These are the twenty Marvel comic book movies since the modern era began in 1998 with Blade. I didn’t think there was anything worth listing before that ;) ;)

THE GOOD:
1. X-Men 2 : no complaints here.
2. X-Men 3 : Dark Phoenix was a travesty but I loved all the little bits.
3. X-Men : excellent introduction but not much fighting
4. Iron Man : well done.
5. Blade II : so much fun!
6. Blade : the first modern comic movie, the first one to prove that they don’t have to suck

THE BAD:
7. Spider-Man 3 : three villains, yay. Venom was completely mishandled though.
8. Spider-Man : god why do they take so long with the origin story? Gobby was good though.
9. Fantastic Four 2 : aside from messing up Galactus, surprisingly decent.
10. Wolverine : aside from the ridiculous ending and treatment of Deadpool, it’s alright.
11. The Incredible Hulk : definitely an improvement.
12. Daredevil : aside from a rushed ending with Kingpin it’s pretty good.

AND THE UGLY:
13. Blade: Trinity : such a disappointing end after two good movies.
14. Fantastic Four : so boring. No action. Doom is lame.
15. Hulk : the comic book panel thing is great but the story is boring as hell.
16. Spider-Man 2 : I hate this movie. Three action scenes and a whole lot of teen soap opera. Ugh.
17. Ghost Rider : lame.
18. Elektra : lame.
19. Punisher: War Zone : it was closer to the comics but it also looked like it had the budget of a TV movie.
20. The Punisher : of course! The Punisher lives in Tampa Florida! Brilliant!

Wow, looking at this list, I suddenly realized something. Most of the Marvel movies make complete messes of their main villains, turning them into some diet coke version of their real glory. Dark Phoenix. Venom. Galactus. Deadpool. Doctor Doom.

THE GREAT

Daredevil. It's dark. It's got great action and great pathos. Bullseye & Foggy Nelson provide some great humor. The Daredevil/Elektra romance is the best tragic romance in superhero history. It's the story of two very damaged people who suddenly find each other.

X-Men. Bryan Singer transformed this colorful superhero story into a plausible science fiction story and an allegory about prejudice. It's a little light on the action but is filled with great dialogue & great performances, particularly from Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, & Anna Paquin.

X2. Bryan Singer gets the budget needed to really expand the X-Men universe and throw in some massive action sequences while still keeping the focus on the characters. Alan Cumming & Brian Cox are great additions to the cast as Nightcrawler & Col. Stryker.

Spider-Man. Probably the most accurate superhero adaptation since Superman back in 1978. Sam Raimi makes a nerdy teenager swinging around in red spandex look cool. Willem Dafoe is great madness as the Green Goblin. The unrequited love between Peter & Mary Jane is rudimentary but very well done.

Blade. Wesley Snipes kicks ass like nobody's business. Kris Kristoferson is the quintessential crusty mentor.

THE GOOD

Blade II. It's got some great action scenes. It lacks the elegance of the 1st film. Whistler's retconned non-suicide doesn't make any sense but it's OK because he gets most of the best lines here.

Iron Man. The plot sometimes feels like an afterthought but the movie overall is very fun. Robert Downey Jr. carries the film with a surprising, fun, quirky portrayal of Tony Stark. The action scenes are pretty cool.

X-Men: The Last Stand. The movie fails to cash in on the enormous potential of the Dark Phoenix story. However, the immense gravitas of the cast carries the movie through its stupider points. There are a few moments of epic greatness, like when Phoenix kills Professor Xavier or when Wolverine kills Phoenix. Brett Ratner just can't pull off the quiet moments the way Singer could.

THE SO-SO

Spider-Man 3. Some good action scenes but they completely botched the Venom storyline in ways that are even more astonishing than the botching of the Dark Phoenix storyline.

Spider-Man 2. Some good action scenes that have absolutely nothing to do with the plot. I'm sure that, if Sam Raimi could have made a 2-hour Spider-Man movie that consisted of nothing but juvenile teen angst, he would have. Dr. Octopus seems like a formality.

Ghost Rider. Cheesey movie but I think Nicolas Cage is pretty good in it. Personally, I'd much rather see a prequel film starring Sam Elliott.

Blade Trinity.
It's clear that neither Wesley Snipes nor Kris Kristoferson wanted to make this movie. They phone in the whole thing. Ryan Reynolds tries to salvage what little he can with some 1-liners. Dominic Purcell is in a dead heat with Van Helsing's Richard Roxburgh for WORST SCREEN DRACULA EVER!

THE AWFUL

Elektra. Jennifer Garner looks hot in the red costume. Terrence Stamp should have been in it more.

Hulk. The movie drowns in its own artsy-ness. Eric Bana is a complete blank as Bruce Banner. Too bad too, because this movie has a lot more soul than its follow-up. Sam Elliott was born to play General Ross. Some of the fight in the desert is fun. It's just not enough to make the rest of it worth sitting through.

The Incredible Hulk. Edward Norton is a great improvement over Eric Bana. The movie moves along at a pretty quick pace. But in every other respect, this film is a soulless piece of Hollywood garbage that completely misses the deeper themes of the character. While neither film is good, the 2003 film came closer.

Fantastic Four. Michael Chiklis is a perfect Thing. Chris Evans proves time & time again that he's got the charisma to move on to better leading roles than this. The rest of the cast are strictly lightweights.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Ditto. It's more of the same, but now, it's old.

The Punisher. Crap, although better than the 1989 version with Dolph Lundgren.

For what it's worth, the 1990 Captain America movie is shockingly bad as well.

I haven't yet seen Punisher: War Zone or Wolverine. Maybe I'll rent Punisher: War Zone tonight.

THE GREAT
X2: Still number one.
Iron Man: Completely awesome.

THE GOOD
X-Men: Not quite as good as its sequel, but still very good.
Daredevil (Director's Cut): The theatrical version was okay, but the DC was a huge improvement.
The Incredible Hulk: A big improvement over Hulk. I'd really like to see the extended version, though.
Spider-Man: Easily the best of the three, but it still didn't blow me away. Green Goblin's costume is still hilariously bad.
Blade: Badass.
Blade II: A bit of a decline from the first one, but still very entertaining.

THE SO-SO
Spider-Man 2: I seem to be in the minority on this one. Many hail it as the greatest comic book movie ever. I find it completely underwhelming and overrated. J. K. Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson is just about the only saving grace.
Fantastic Four: This only rates as "so-so" because of Chiklis as the Thing and Evans as Johnny Storm. Otherwise it's awful.

THE BAD
Spider-Man 3: A complete train wreck. It wasn't entirely Sam Raimi's fault, as Venom was forced into this one, but it's just terrible.
X-Men: The Last Stand: Talk about a fall from grace. This is the best they could give us after the fantastic X2?
Blade: Trinity: Just crap. Even Ryan Reynolds couldn't salvage this.
Hulk: Zzzzz...

Haven't seen: Elektra, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, The Punisher, Punisher: War Zone, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Jameson and the El-train fight. But you're right. I got so sick of hearing about how brilliant this film is; how it's the greatest comic book movie ever, etc. (I think The Dark Knight & Iron Man have played a big part in shutting those people up.)

Although, I must admit that I like it a bit more now that I'm older. (When it first came out, I was going through a very difficult time in my life. Peter's angst just drove me deeper into depression. Now, it's easier for me to detach myself emotionally from the film; or else slap myself and scream, "Snap out of it!";))

The Punisher (2004)
X-Men

Yeah, the L-train fight was decent, but the end of that scene, where Peter gets knocked out and everybody on the train sees his face, kind of ruined it.

Yeah that scene was a real WTF? moment, but after that I got back into comics and Peter does get his mask ripped off in front of people left and right. Hell he lets fifty super villains see him without his mask in New Avengers Vol 1! And in Ultimate Spidey everybody knows his ID it seems, I just read a trade where Osbourn with five other villains is going after Peter.

His "constipated and straining face" when stopping the train is pretty shitty too. ;)

McQuire just can't act strong emotions. About the only emotion he can act is "blah."

It looks like everybody forgot one of the best Marvel movies of them all.
