I think you've summarized it perfectly.

Also, it's so clear that one's opinion and stance on the series factors heavily into how this kind of stuff is categorized.

If I LIKE something, I will say that these kinds of things are tributes and draw continuity for the fans.

If I don't like something, those exact same things are lame fanwanky garbage, apparently.

It's yet another fan double standard assessment, weighted entirely on what conclusion best services my needs and justifies my opinions.

Kind of off topic, but IMHO there is no point to even having any of the post TOS series without some level of "fanwank." After all, if you can tell the story within any old sci-fi setting, why are you setting it in the Trekverse? I know that the cynical reason is to cash in on the brand name, but there's no practical, story-based reason to do so.

If this was a rate the most 'fanwank' thread, Discovery would be first on the list

1. DS9 - It was different aspect of the Trek Universe especially what was built upon with TNG
2. DSC - I really enjoyed it
3. TNG - It was just neutral, nothing great, nothing terrible
4. VOY - Started off strong, but it became TNG in Delta Quadrant
5. TOS - Too many have rose-colored glasses, it was a decent season
6. ENT - Too TNG

This is purely from first seasons- I do not think discovery will stay at the top and tng at the bottom once later series are included.
