I just didn't know I couldn't keep a straight face watching this and those sound effects.

The last funeral I went to the coffin was put into a concrete container with a lid.

"Finally, on September 26, 1901, all was ready. Because of the permanency of this burial, a discussion arose among those present as to whether the coffin should be opened. Some people argued that the remains should be identified due to rumors around the country that Mr. Lincoln was not the body in the box. Other people thought opening the casket would be a violation of privacy. In the end, it was decided to open the coffin."

Gotta love that we've had conspiracy nuts for hundreds of years now.

They were going to move her body and inter it elsewhere (in a monastery chapel ) when they found that she hadn't decomposed. I guess that's one of the criteria for becoming a saint. People are coming from all over to see this nun. Kinda creepy.
Death fascinates many. Why not?

Please forgive my ignorance, but just curious as to how exhuming the body shows that one way or the other?

Yes? ‍

Firt time I ever heard of the practice was in a book about Saint Father Damien of Moloka’i, in the biographical book Leper Priest of Moloka’i. (Great read, by the way.)

The last chapter, IIRC, was about the canonization process, which was interesting and this aspect was mentioned. There was a slight aside about how it was addressed in his case since he passed away from leprosy, but didn’t go into any details…

(My odd sense of humor, of course, sees that as, err, ‘ripe’ material for comic material, but definitely not one that could be done in today’s environment. The Monty Python gang would have a field day with it… :guffaw:)

Cheers,

Luv Monty btw. :D

By showing (or not) the usual level of decay of a body that's been dead for that specific length of time.

Thank you for the explanation. I'm still not entirely sure how decomposition, or lack thereof, shows that the previously living person couldn't be corrupt, but I think I'm going to just file that under "religious things I'm not meant to understand". :)

I'm guessing here but maybe the decomposition, or lack of serves as an indicator of how much favour they had with God

Been looking at buying a pro fitted cap. Both the 5/8 and 3/4 cap feel like they fit perfectly. Does that mean they're both fine? Is there anything I need to take into consideration?

What was the real reason behind sealing Lincoln's coffin in concrete?

a) To prevent the body's real identity from being discovered?
b) To prevent the undead from rising from the grave?
