Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

I started learning some Japanese. Now watching a Japanese film with subtitles and I’m starting to be able to pull out a few phrases here and there in the Japanese.

It’s amazing how different the subtitles sometimes are from exactly what they are saying.

Being from a non-native english speaking country, and are used to subtitles, this is happening all the time...
Sometimes it's so shockingly different that im more entertained by that, then what i am actually watching.

I'm learning more and more that movie translators aren't just translating the words that are being said, they're Americanizing the cultural gist of what's being said. I'd rather hear a direct translation as possible even if I don't get some of the cultural references. Especially for a movie like Tokyo Story which is specifically about the culture.

Another interesting particularity of Japanese, beginner Japanese courses always teach the politeness level where you're talking to strangers. Then you watch a movie and it's all close friends and family talking the casual politeness level.

^I think it's typical for when they create subtitles. Often, I can tell when the subtitles don't truly match what the actors are saying. There are times when the actors/characters appear to be saying more than the subtitles suggest. Sometimes, I lipread a couple words that didn't show up in the subtitles. Sometimes, they seem to skip a couple sentences at time...

It would appear I picked a very bad time to run low on hand sanitizer. Because of pandemic fears, I can't find *any* in any of my usual stores.

I guess that people weren't washing their hands before? :wtf:

I read a statistic yesterday. It's actually disgusting, so I wasn't going to share it, but then I figured I couldn't reference it without sharing what it was, so I will put it in spoiler code. Just remember, it is disgusting, and you will regret reading it.

Only 19% of people wash their hands with soap after coming in contact with feces.

Not even kidding. This is the article that mentioned it:

On one hand, I wish I didn't know that. On the other hand, now I know that even after COVID-19 is no longer the fear du jour, I still shouldn't shake anyone's hand, ever.
