Just realized today that the care tag on one of my tops includes the helpful tip: "Keep away from fire".

Honestly, I just assume every warning label costs extra time & money to include, which means it wouldn't be there unless someone had done something moronic enough that it became necessary, for fear of further litigation. So yeah... I can see some dumbass not knowing that it might catch on fire, & some lawyer thinking they could bilk a buck by saying it wasn't their fault for not knowing

I bought a Kindle book and it's riddled with errors and grammatical goofs like using an apostrophe for possessive words and commas missing or improperly used. The most hilarious goof though (and my personal favorite) is the following: "She was educated by a personal Tudor" So which Tudor was it--Elizabeth I? Henry the Eighth?
And no, it wasn't set in the 16th century. I don't know if I can finish this book. It's a mess.

Your examples are nations though, yes? I have trouble figuring it out myself too, but people who go to marijuana legal places & smoke it there, people who go to prostitution legal places (Which we have here) & do that. I mean, from a legal aspect, what's the difference really? In the case of abortion, I guess you'd just have to make sure they couldn't declare you pregnant in your own state & then be able to declare you not suitably upon return. Keep your state out of it, at all costs, essentially?

These warnings are really annoying. The other day I bought a bar of hazelnut chocolate and it actually said on the wrapper "may contain traces of hazelnuts". If it weren't so ridiculous I'd weep. Common sense is a species on the brink of extinction.

Lawyers are the enemy of common sense.

@rhubarbodendron: Yeah, that "may contain hazelnuts" warning does indeed fall under the category of DUH.

But if you want even more hilarity, go to any city in California. There are signs literally EVERYWHERE which say that [insert name of person, place or thing] may cause cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm. It doesn't say HOW they might do this, or even if they have any actual risk of doing so, but again...it's all about the damn lawyers.

Proposition 65, they call it. A more useless piece of legislation I have yet to encounter.

Around 2002 we used to have a poster here who called himself Wonko the Sane. He ended all his posts with "you are all insane!" The account was locked as it was a dual but he was fun. By the looks of it the original account was closed as well, at least I haven't seen him around for more than a decade now. It's a pity that so many familiar names are lacking today. I had hoped the thread would get a few to de-lurk and post. (But then you never know what might go on secretly in the Admirals' Lounge.. )
