I never quite understood the phrase "have your cake and eat it, too". What's the point of having cake if you're not gonna eat it?

I had an epiphany at some point, but my confusion was compounded because in Yorkshire, having cake and eating cake, is the same damned thing.

Any road. It would work better if the phrase was ‘still possessing your cake, after you consumed it’.

As old adages go, this one is bollocks.

I understand it as having your cake twice. The French equivalent is "Avoir le beurre et l'argent du beurre."
Literally: "Have the butter and the butter's money (after you've sold it)."

This is the face of any animal that would ever become self-aware and the memories of what they did as lower-intelligent lifeforms dawns on them and just how gross most of it was or that many of them never really knew their mom or dad or siblings. It's also the face of a animal that just saw the little girl from "Rings."

Do you think their has ever been a little kid over all these years on the Trekbbs? I know it's against the rules but surely at least one of them broke those rules over the years and posted something or spammed or even lurked. As far as I know this has never been found out if it did happen.

Well, considering that some kids mature very quickly and some adults behave like kids... I don't think we'd know if it happened.

Thought for the day: Twenty years ago, kids were told not to meet up with random people they find on the internet, and never get in a car with a stranger. So what do they do now? They use Uber to call up random stranger on the internet to get picked up in a car......

It's really no different than taking a taxicab. You wouldn't think twice about getting into a cab driven by someone you've never met before, so why would Uber be any different?

I mean, Uber drivers have to be licensed, pass a background check, and meet certain minimum requirements. So it's not like any random schmuck can declare themselves an Uber driver. They have to go and get "hired" first.

Indeed, it may actually be safer to ride with Uber than with a traditional cab service. Linky To wit:

Finally, Uber drivers and riders can rate each other, so abusive individuals are weeded out and removed from the system.

I've seen that meme in several places recently.

That's very unfortunate and glad they survived that period in time.

Uber though is a brilliant word to describe something.

From the bedroom of my childhood home, I could see a folly in the distance, at the opposite side of the valley, peaking out above the tree tops. That was called Uber Stand, but it was spelled Hoober.

I love follies =) Can't imagine how they got this negative name. Most of them are so pretty! My grandparents had a lovely one in their garden, all covered in pink roses - the blossoms were almost ball-shaped and the scent was heavenly. My mom had a wreath of them when she married and we kids used to play in the folly when it was very hot or rainy.
It's torn down now and they built a parking lot where the garden used to be *sigh*

you're lucky! At my office they always have fire drills with artificial smoke and stuff. Highly annoying as the house needs to be aired out for hours afterwards which is rather unpleasant in winter at -20°C. Thank heaven our boss now forbid the smoke grenades!

I've seen people more compassionate to fictitious people (in tv series for example) than they are to people close to them with real problems. I guess it's cheaper that way.
