Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

How did we arrive in 2026 and some (very well known) people are still demonstrating a huge amount of ignorance towards people with disabilities, in this case Tourettes.

The reaction to this week's Baftas and John Davidson, whos story the film I Swear is based on, has been quite shocking in some quarters.
The same goes for trans people, my heart goes out to the trans community in Kansas

Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown,
And things seem hard or tough,
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft,
And you feel that you've had quite eno-o-o-o-o-ough.....

Gotta love Monty Python!

Not true.

Legislation or court precedent or local guidance is now in place in a number jurisdictions requiring people to use bathrooms aligning to their birth gender.

That means, for example, Hannah Graf or Jazz Jennings would be required to go to a men's toilet (not fully cubicled) and not use a women's (fully cubicled).

In the case of Hannah's husband, Jake, with a male voice and beard, he is required to go to a women's bathroom, except of course if he tried to go to a women's bathroom that wouldn't be particularly good for anyone. If he goes to a men's bathroom, he's legally not allowed in there either.

I believe the situation in the US has become similar in parts.

"I am not allowed to go to the bathroom" and "I am not allowed to go to the bathroom anywhere I want" are not the same thing.

What is the proper pronunciation of Qatar?

Watching the terrible news this morning (seriously, WTF?) and three different reporters had three different pronunciations.

One said "Cutter," one said "Qwa-tar" and the other said "Kah-tar."

Thank you! I was worried I had been saying it wrong for years. It's just very odd to hear three different pronunciations in one news story.

I have heard a resident of that part of the world say what sounded like "kahtah".

I guess that's where the white people "cutter" thing comes from?

"QAH-tahrr".
The "Q" is pronounced like a "K" sound with the back of the soft palate close to where you'd make a hard "G" sound.
The "R" is trilled like in Spanish.

Wife wants Thanksgiving dinner for dinner tonight. So it's time to get creative.

Here's the mashed potatoes we are trying out for the first time. I did get a potato ricer, which I also had never heard about.

and here's how to make the butter, which I'll have to do next time. I never even heard about cultured butter before watching the video above.

That's what I remember from years ago when I used QA a lot and transited Doha regularly for work, staying over a couple of times. The impression I got was that non-Qataris were aiming for this, didn't always get there, but what they managed, appeared to be en route to this.

Like Jay-Den really.

Just for those of you unaware, this is the issue our Trans friends currently face in the UK

What's to stop him from just going to the men's bathroom? Most trans men are completely indistinguishable from biological men, so this law is impossible to enforce.

Nothing really, the ruling isn't intended to work like that. It's not about having a toilet police its about giving people the right to object and organizations the right to prevent access.

So for example if someone born male, is male in appearance but identifies ad female it gives a female the right to object to them using the female toilet.

On a purely practical level, nothing. But when this moves into the arena of workplaces, or where the person is well known, then it becomes more of an obstruction to daily life. And he's speaking not just for him, but for Hannah, who is also there but the interview is clipped.

Just thinking of all the stuff I still need to get rid of and clear out. I want this year to be the year of serious decluttering. I've gotten rid of a lot of things in the past 2 years, but I want to do even more than that this year.

When did I start using the handrail more and more when climbing up and down stairs.
That feels like such an old person thing to do.
