Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

I will admit that I don't really know a lot about Jimmy Carter's time as president. However, I have seen a lot about his humanitarian and charitable work in his post-presidential life. He always seemed like such a kind and compassionate person. The world could certainly use more people like him.

My condolences to his friends and family. The world will be a little dimmer without his light.
you guys should build him a monument (i'd say a fucking monument but he would have considered that rude language)
i had a better link but can't find it right now

I went out with a friend on New Years. We had had servo sausage rolls then watched some 9pm fireworks, then went to her friends place, then drove around western sydney until midnight, then went back to her place and then i got home about 1.30. the last time i did anything on new years was like in the 2000s. it was just fun to do something for once.

Does anyone go to bed early on New Years Eve? Maybe it's just me getting older, but the last few New Years Eve's and tonight included, I just want to go to bed and not wait till Midnight. I have a whole year to celebrate the New Year, so what makes the first midnight of the new year so important. Maybe it's relief of getting through another year. Maybe it's the hope springs eternal of better things. For me, and maybe I'm just grown more cynical, New Years Day is just another day.

With that being said,

Happy New Year everyone. I hope you have great things in store for 2025, and everyone has more positives than negatives in life. May Hope Spring Eternal for another year.
no chance where i live - imagine omaha beach

Hot Cross Buns are a great way to start the day off. They should be available all year round.
I thought they were! At least in the UK (although there seemed to be a minor hiatus over Christmas).

I like hxb but don't like them being ubiquitous. I want seasonality and tradition. Hxb on Good Friday and for breakfast on Easter Day: toasted teacakes, the rest of the year.

Several years ago a guy made fun of how a man with cerebral palsy walked and then sucker punched him. It was caught on camera. He took "responsibility" for his actions while also lying about what the disabled man did to deserve it. He also tried to claim everything was all blown out of proportion and that he didn't deserve to lose everything because of it. He even cried to the judge for leniency, which he did not receive.

I just came across a YouTube video randomly that was a news story. This man was killed in a motorcycle crash two years ago trying to evade police. Every news story about his death calls him the sucker punch guy.

you don't want me to give you a 'like' for that, but i kinda do

Not a fan of the idea we might get winter ice on the ground this weekend and travel will be hard if not impossible for many, but it is what it is.

Soap opera legend Thom Christopher has passed away at the age of 84. People on this board will probably know him best as Hawk on season two of Buck Rogers.
This was very sad to read. He was really tremendous in the role and, while underused, a really fantastic addition to the series. A really excellent actor who moved and performed with grace.

A character that they had zero idea what to do with on the show, really the whole show was let down by cheap production and bad writing all round but season two could have been a whole world better had they had the same team as season 1 for the writing. Some of those episodes are just ugh! they are not fun to watch again.
I agree that Hawk was let down by an utter lack of planning. He had an amazing introductory episode, one that remains my favorite of the run. Gil Gerard was never better.

Funny enough, and something I didn't realize until recently, the episode "Time of the Hawk" is an expanded remake of a James Arness's favorite episode of Gunsmoke called "Chato" guest starring Ricardo Montalban as the titular character. It is, beat for beat, the same story, reconfigured to fill a two hour timeslot, a sci-fi format and to make Hawk a regular. No coincidence that John Mantley produced Gunsmoke and the second season of Buck Rogers.

Like Maya in the second year of Space: 1999, Hawk was the lone alien regular introduced in a revamped second season and probably the main reason we got another year. Unlike most fans, I enjoyed the second season of Buck, just like I loved the second year of 1999. A lot of that boils down to the new character and the actor hired. Thom Christopher was excellent and I really with they had him have to work harder to fit in. But Buck's "Kirk" needed his "Spock" and so they bonded immediately.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was never a "good" show and never seemed to settle on what it wanted to be and it varied in tone while never rising to any real level of greatness. It was really never more than fun. But while the second year was very different (a more serious mash up of Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and the aforementioned Gunsmoke), it was for me still a great way to spend an hour. Like 1999, the series hit me at the right age and I was already accustomed to weird format changes between seasons, Buck's changes didn't bother me. And the music was incredible (happily Intrada Records released a ton of it).

Thom Christopher earned his place in the annals of sci-fi TV legend based on his gusto alone.

Wait... Hot Cross Buns are a thing?

Although I've enjoyed hot cross buns for years, I only learned that they have some kind of association with Easter in certain part of the world within the last couple years, on this very board. As far as I am aware, they are available year-round here.

Had some chocolate ones this morning.

Interesting, I didn't know there were chocolate ones! The ones I am familiar with look like this:

I like my hot cross buns to be traditional. Fruit-based variants are okay but chocolate ones (I once picked up a pack of "triple chocolate" ones) are an abomination. These days hxb seem to have become much more bready than they used to be - closer to ordinary fruit buns.

Although I complain about them being available all the year round, hxb were not only a traditional Good Friday food but also appeared on saints' days too. Over the years, there was a lot of argy-bargy with the Church trying to ban their appearance on non-religious occasions so it could be argued that them being in the shops all the time is traditional.

There are lots of varieties here. I brought two packs a few days ago. There is also Apple & Cinnamon, traditional fruit and many more flavours. I want to try Arnotts Iced Vovo Hot Cross buns. They are new this year. There is also Vegemite and Cheese Hot Cross Buns too.

That being said - it's lunch time here.

Seeing all the goings on with Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni is really confusing. The internet seems split on which party is more at fault, i guess it's going to come out in time.
