Raiders of the Lost Ark is 35 this year

HarryCanyon1982

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Can you believe this classic is 35 years old and has stood the test of time? a quality masterpiece of creativity and pure hollywood filmmaking.

I saw this 32 years ago on HBO at age 3 and been a fave of mine since.

Just had my 45th birthday, and now this. Thanks for making me feel really old.

Raiders is my number one favourite movie. It's practically a perfect film in every sense. Spielberg and Ford were at the top of their game. William's score was spot on and he uses certain instruments in a way he never has since. Ben Burtt hit a homerun with those classic sounds. Awww, I could go on...

I remember seeing it three times in theatres. Each time people stood and cheered when the credits rolled. Used to hide my eyes when Nazi faces started to melt. I've worn a replica leather jacket for decades and use the same model of gas mask bag for my work lunch for just a long.

Mine, too! I have seen this movie in a theater 10 times. I can't tell you how many time I've seen it on TV--more than I can count. Hubby and I even had our engagement pictures taken with fedoras on. I have the Raiders March on my mp3 player.

35 years? Holy crap, I'm old.

The "ark meltdown" scene is one of the creepiest things I've ever seen in a film.

And I thought it was pretty funny that the German Gestapo guy was named "Toht", which translates as "Dead".

Saw the movie as a kid in 1981 at the University Theater in Toronto, thought that it was amazing, still do. Want to get a jacket and fedora like Indiana's, dress up as him (might have to lose some pounds, though.)

Oh c'mon guys (and gals)... It's not the years, it's the mileage!

Fond memories of multiple theater viewings of this for me too... It's funny to think, as times have changed, the multiple visits to the theater to see something is a thing of the past. Now with movies so readily available via disc, download or streaming, there's no real need.. The positive side of that, is that it's so damn expensive to go to the movies anymore...

I've watched Raiders of the Lost Ark, recently, after not having watched it in a while. I wondered if it might've lost any appeal for me, or is the magic still alive & well? And I have to tell you that I was singularly impressed by how "real" or "realistic" everything is in this movie. Suspension of Disbelief is most easily achieved.

When he's in the Jungle, it looks totally real. When he's clinging to the bottom of a truck, by his whip and shimmying down towards the end of it, that looks real. The limitations do show, however, in sets like the map room, especially. The climax also, has a very artificial quality to it. But it's so spectacular and over-the-top that it's easily 'forgiven.'

In all, Raiders of the Lost Ark really looks very, very good. And having been made in a past decade from so long ago, it helps push the look of it back more ... the datedness helps, in many cases. But for as far as Hollywood's come, since, everything about The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull looked false ... from the jungles, with their frequent lensflares to help sell it, to the shitty matts used at the military compound Jones finds himself in. There's a CGI sheen, throughout and it doesn't look very good ... I can't believe they're making another one.

True story: I first caught RAIDERS during a sneak preview they ran on a special double bill with THE LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER.

My college friends and I actually went to the theater to see the Lone Ranger, although we knew they were also running a preview of something called "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which we knew next to nothing about. Something to do with Noah's Ark, maybe?

Needless to say, RAIDERS completely blew THE LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER out of the water .. .... :)

I wonder what a Tom Selleck version would have been like and whether there would have been at least three more films and spin-offs. Was the casting of Harrison Ford essential to the success of the franchise?

I'm of the opinion that Tom Selleck would not have worked. The bar scene, where Jones first reunites with Marion would've been a disaster ... and it would've just gone downhill from there. Harrison Ford's roguish charm was essential for Jones to be likeable.

^^ I think you nailed it.. Harrison Ford has roguish charm, whereas Tom Selleck (especially back then) had an oafish charm about him. It would have completely set a different tone for the character. Sure, Indy can clown around, but underneath it, there's always a glint in his eye that tells you he's one step ahead. And in those times when he's NOT one step ahead, he's got the moxie to wiggle his way out of the situation.

I don't know of Tom Selleck would have worked or not. In my opinion, Selleck is much better at comedy than Ford is.

^^ Agreed... In the usual comic stylings, Selleck is far better at comedy.. However, Ford's trademark humor is sardonic, which I feel fits Indy better than just being funny.

Even with Harrison Ford in the pilot's seat, the Indiana Jones franchise has just gotten worse, with every sequel. I know they all have their fans, but the only decent sequel was Temple of Doom. Part of the problem was that if you saw Raiders, there's just no way to follow that up. It's a tough act to follow. The other problem was the McGuffin used for every follow up sucked, frankly.

Stones ... a Cup ... a Crystal ... I mean, who gives a shit? After encountering Yahweh, it's time to close up shoppe. And the worst of it is, that Harrison Ford won't let the part go. Other actors know when they've aged out of a signature role and they move on. But not Ford. He's even committed himself to making another one. And the girls that came after just couldn't compare to Marion in Raiders ... not even older Marion. But none of this has tarnished the first movie, at least. Raiders of the Lost Ark stands alone ...

I enjoy them all on different levels and to varying degrees, but they never managed to top "Raiders."

I was born the night after my parents saw this film. My mom thought she had a stomach ache from eating too much popcorn, but, nope, it was me! :D
