Spoilers Raffi Musiker fans, where are you?

It's a shame she never was a guest on TNG. On the other hand - Michelle Hurd may have played a totally different character.

I found her annoying and self pitying at the start. But she grew on me. I like how she's emotionally either all in or not at all. There's no middle ground, you're either nothing or you're LOVED.
For me though, your “nothing” equaled “accepted after a thorough checkout”. She had every reason to be dubious about Jurati when she came on board but accepted her in the end after all that had happened.

I like the character and actress I think they should go deeper on her issues though. Show that addiction is more than a personality quirk and really get into it with her and Picard.

I dont really get how she can be so friendly on the ship but apparently such a bad mom that her son hates her so much. Even if she was absent it seems like she would be likeable when she was there.

I know people who have better relations with 'strangers' than with their own kids....it does happen

New Trek isn't very good with names. "Raffi Musiker", "Michael Burnham", "Book", "Craft", "Agnes Juratti" (that last one for a character who isn't 80 years old and isn't Indian)
Jurati is also Latin. Same root as jury.
This is the franchise that gave us a white guy named Noonian Soong.
When TNG was first being promoted, I rolled eyes at "Crusher" and "Riker".

He might be referring to "Agnes", which is very 1930's to 1950's.

Indian referred to Jurati.
Yeah, Agnes is currently an "old lady name" at least in America. In a few Centuries maybe not. Though 32 year old Swedish singer Agnes and 20 year old German skier Agnes Reisch might feel otherwise. ;)

In The Last Best Hope Maddox calls her Aggie!

What's the problem with "Musiker"?

"Agnes" sounds very old-fashioned to me, but names come into and go out of fashion all the time, so by the time Jurati was born, it might have been all the rage.

Right now Raffi is the closest thing we have to a "smart" character on the show, meaning she fixes problems with her brain. Is snake leaf 24th century marijuana? If so, this whole addiction thing must be about the liquor.

"Snakeleaf" - or "horx" per Mr. Chabon's Instagram Q&As - is an Orion variant of the cannabis concept. Whether imported from Sol system and modified, or specific to Pi-3 Orionis' worlds...?

And if they're going to do a marijuana allegory with snake leaf, they're not going to come down on it as some sort of hideous addiction. Patrick Stewart smokes marijuana everyday and is a proponent for its legalization.
