got a question for you guys.

why are rabbits sometimes called bunnies?.
thought got into my head yeasterday treid to google it and got rabbit sites. just curious

I believe that the word comes from the word "bun" which was used in some English dialects to refer to the rabbit's tail. Later on it was used to refer to the whole rabbit, especially the juvenile rabbit.

Edited to add the origin of the word 'bun'

Dialectal, hind part of a rabbit or squirrel, from Scottish Gaelic, stump, bottom, from Old Irish.

Me. I did google it to confirm what I thought it was i.e I knew it had to do with the tail. My head is full of useless trivia most of it is half-forgotten.

Ehhhh . . . What's up, Doc?

I just know that rabbits make a good stew.

I find that very doubtful, as I've been living with many bunnies for many years and have yet to see them cook anything.

Do you mean they are more helpless in the kitchen than my sons are?

Oh heavens no. They can defend themselves quite well in the kitchen, and saving that, they are skilled at hiding behind the stove and refrigerator. They just can't cook. They can't even make a simple salad!

Heh. When I read the question, I was going to jokingly suggest that it's because whenever I try to take a picture of a rabbit, I only get its buns:

But I guess it's no joke. :rommie:
