R2-D2 found in STID

Is this for real?

R2-D2 appears in one form or another in every JJ Abrams movie. Like Slusho or the name Kelvin, it's just one of his in jokes.

I don't think R2 is in all of them, or at least he's very well hidden in some if he's there. He hasn't been spotted in MI3 or Cloverfield (although Abrams didn't direct that) that I'm aware of (though the Cloverfield Slusho and Tagruato Corp. references made it into Star Trek).

R2 is at least in ST, STiD, Super 8, and if you want to count an Orci/Kurtzman written film produced by Abrams' idol Spielberg and directed by Bay who Abrams has worked with before (he punched up the script of Armageddon), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Spielberg (or more likely people working with him on the production design) has also included R2 in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Close Encounters, and Goonies (which he wrote the story for and executive produced).

Oh, and the Millennium Falcon was in First Contact, but that has nothing to do with any of these guys.

so no one noticed this the entire time the movie was playing in theaters?
I'm starting to wonder if R2's only being inserted later for the DVD releases

I recall the hull breach scene was included in one of the pre-release trailers. If anyone remembers which one and cares enough to go frame-by-frame, perhaps we can find out

You'd have to have superhuman visual processing to see R2 in the theater. He's there for about 1 second or so and he's in a bunch of CGI wreckage with motion blur.

He was also in ST '09 and I don't remember anyone finding him until it came out on video. Someone at ILM quietly let it slip that he was in there beforehand, but no one was able to catch it in the theater, AFAIK.

It's an in-joke. Might be ILM's idea.

Artoo's made cameos in effects shots going all the way back to Close Encounters of the Third Kind (link).
That particular model is full of odd little details. It has some WWII planes, a submarine, a cemetery, a TIE fighter, plus many others I can't remember. It should still be on display at the National Air & Space Museum's Udvar Hazy Center, in front of the space shuttle, if you want to have a look for yourself!
