R.I.P. Christopher Plummer

taH pagh, taHbe'!

Star Trek VI
would have been special regardless, but Plummer really elevated the film with his performance. As much as I like the TNG/DS9 Klingons, his cunning, theatrical portrayal of General Chang is so much fun, I really wish we would have seen more Klingons like this.

RIP, Mr. Plummer. A masterful Canadian talent! Chang was a great character, but his best role was almost certainly Captain Von Trapp (who shared some similar personality quirks with Chang).

Whether intentional or not (and I tend to think it was), Plummer played Chang as a classic, ruthless TOS Klingon. I always figured that was done on purpose, as part of the TOS grand finale. He even had the fu manchu moustache and an almost smooth forehead!

Christopher Plummer certainly is a cinema legend. His passing was still a bit of a shock to me, even though I knew he was getting up there in years.

On a Star Trek note, ST6 isn't his only Chang performance. He was gracious enough to come back for the game Klingon Academy. Steam or GOG should find a way to get this rereleased so we can all enjoy that performance again! And I wouldn't be averse to a young Chang in Strange New Worlds either.

Plummer's look as Chang was a bit of an accident. When they were doing a make-up test, the make-up artist put the forehead and skullcap on, Plummer went, "This is great!" and the make-up artist was like, "But we're not done. I have this Klingon wig to put on," and Plummer was like, "No, we're good here." So they redesigned Chang to be bald, and I believe the eyepatch was also Plummer's idea.

There's a 2-hour compilation of the Klingon Academy cutscenes on YouTube. I was skipping through it this afternoon, and while Plummer is visibly older and the direction is fairly static, he didn't ham it up and clearly treated it seriously.

He was much more interesting in KA, and he was also great in Remember and The Exception!

Bummer. He was a treasure. He took a thin, poorly written villain and elevated it with his stellar performance in TUC.

RIP, Mr. Plummer

Oh man, I just watched Knives Out this past weekend as well. :/

Maybe I'll give TUC a spin this weekend. He's also in 12 Monkeys!

RIP Mr. Plummer. Never a bad performance in the bunch.

Makes sense that they would know each other so well. The were no doubt contemporaries on the theatre scene in Montreal back in the day (only three years apart in age).

It's been a decade since I read Plummer's memoir, but I recall that he wrote fondly of Shatner when he was the young Shakespearan thesp in the 1950s, and that doing Star Trek VI was a reunion of two old friends that both enjoyed.
