It as the Star Wars novel what was ghost-written by Foster. The TMP novel doesn't "sound" like his writing style. You know that one of the early novels was written by Gene Roddenberry, right?
If you're thinking of the TMP novelization, my understanding is that although Roddenberry's name is on the cover, it was actually ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster. That could just be an unfounded rumour, though.
The prose and particularly dialogue is awkward enough, though, to suggest that it was either marked up by GR or that he wrote passages of it; certainly he must have approved it. Even on a tight schedule Foster's generally better than the TMP novelization, and I don't see stuff like the explanation for Kirk's middle name coming from anywhere other than the clumsily prurient recesses of Roddenberry's psyche.
