Okay, taking Keenser's presence on the Enterprise at the end of the movie as a non-negotiable (so "shoot him out of the nearest airlock" is not an option :p ) - what rank do you think he has?

I'm writing a quick story and Spock's going to mention him, so I need to know his rank. I think it would be either Crewman or Ensign, but I can't decide which.

What do you all think?

Honestly? So we won't contradict anything by acccident, I'd just have Spock say "Mr. Keenser".

But then...I'm not entirely convinced that "Keenser" isn't just Scotty's nickname for him....

I think it's implied, at least, that he's a qualified engineer himself, though perhaps subordinate to Scotty, who (according to Memory Alpha) holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Keenser could plausibly be a Lieutenant, a Lieutenant j.g. or an Ensign.

It's certainly a damn stupid name to saddle a poor alien with, but there we are - I wasn't in charge :)

I think I'll go with Crewman. Thank you for the input.

If anyone's vaguely curious, it's a story for the "Christmas presents for everyone" thread in Misc, I'll be posting it soon, so feel free to go and point and laugh ;)

EDIT: And M'Sharak posts while I'm making tea - I really should remember to refresh before replying!

The issue of him being a qualified engineer is my problem. But is there anything to indicate he's not just a well-trained crewman?

oh sod it, I'm giving the boy a promotion - he'll be an Ensign. If it's good enough for Memory Beta then that's fine by me :techman:

Sorry about that!

Nothing specific, but since he's in the Enterprise engine room at the end, I'd prefer to assume that a request was made (through proper channels, natch!) that Keenser be transferred to Enterprise based on qualifications and abilities he possessed, rather than that he simply tagged along as Scotty's sidekick because they'd happened to be stuck in the same backwater Starfleet posting together.

Oh heavens yes, me too. But I figured they would need to populate the Enterprise with non-commissioned crew as well, so it could still be an official transfer.

Still, he's an Ensign now :)

I just had a thought to check one more thing. It's a little hard to make out in this picture, but he appears to be wearing the same uniform as Scotty, only there's no visible braid on the sleeve, making him an Ensign at the highest. I don't recall whether we saw any crewmen wearing department colors or if they were instead wearing some equivalent of the standard crewman's jumpsuit of TOS.

M', kicking it around the block one more time

If I recall correctly Keenser's rank came from the tie in video game through esurance. It also suggested, however, that Keenser was reassigned back to Delta Vega.

Actually I believe the video game takes place in the original timeline (it uses the old stardate system), so Keenser might not go back to Delta Vega in the new timeline. It's entirely possible that he was only assigned there because he might never have even met Scotty in the original timeline. Now that he has, they probably will continue to serve together on the ship. I wouldn't expect Scotty to want Keenser to leave, they are clearly friendly and work well together.

I agree, also, going by the only time we really hear Keenser "talk" was this exchange: bold and italics emphasized...

Scotty: Aye, that's me. You're in the right place. Unless there's another hardworking, equally starved Starfleet officer around.
Keenser: Me.
Scotty: Get aff! Shut up! You don't eat anything! You can eat, like, a bean, and you're done. I'm talking about food. REAL food!

I like to think that Scotty made the request, and Kirk backed it up.

I also like to think that Keenser helped Scotty get the Transporter on the busted shuttle running.

I hadn't even been thinking of that line, heh, but you're right.

Memory Beta puts his reassignment date at 2265, so seven years after the events of the movie. Also, since the game is a movie tie-in/promo featuring the critters ("polarilla" and "snow slug") also seen in the movie, wouldn't it make more sense for it to be an alt-timeline setting?

I think it's cool that Scotty has a sidekick it will make the job a lot easier what do ya think?
I think you're spamming again. :vulcan:

And as my English Lit teachers always used to tell me, you should look at the original text. Thanks KittyDuran!
