Questions about US jury service

You're going to ban books? That seems draconian.

A kid is murdered and the jury gets rich.

That is not fair. It be like having murders and rapists write books in jail and make money.

I'm not banning books, I'm banning bullshit. You can't scream 'FIRE!" in a mall you shouldn't be able to make money off of someone else's death.

Well, you can't (falsely) shout fire in the mall because it will cause people to be killed by being trampled. You can shout "fire" if you're Michael Stipe of R.E.M. singing "The One I Love" at a show in the mall because its freedom of expression and no one is likely to get trampled (mostly because I don't expect as much moshing at an R.E.M. concert).

Murderers and rapists did something to warrant losing their right to make money off a book (and they can still write the book, they just don't get the money from it). The only thing a juror did was their civic duty to serve in a jury. That's hardly comparable to rape and murder.

Another option:

1) Cooling off period: Six months/1 year (an example). After than you can PROFIT from the telling of your story. Books, movies, paid interviews.

or

2) Non-profit. You can do non paying interviews, blog, vlog, do AMA threads on a board at any time after the trial is closed. So long as you don't violate the secrecy of the deliberations, the rights of the other jurors, attorneys, and/or plaintiff &/ defendant, and you don't make one thin cent off the activities.

Those seem pretty reasonable to me and it's a nice way to meet halfway, I think.
