How would you develop a working ftl drive?

Well to start with you'd have to invent it.

I'd start with a powerful power plant, at least fusion, but if possible even more powerful, like antimatter. Other than that, I'd need a technology leap to put the right components together to actually harness that power and use it for propulsion.
