Question regarding timeline of recent Trek books

Sorry if this question has been asked in other forums, I haven't really been on here in awhile. I just recently am catching up on some current Trek titles after some time away, particularly Indistinguishable from Magic and Children of the Storm.

My question being, am I right in that the timeline dates are diverging a bit again? Children of the Storm I know says takes place in mid 2381, so not long after Desitny, but Magic is now in 2383 a couple years later?

I was just curious, I try to keep my books shelved chronologically and wanted to make sure there was no typos are anything. I don't mind the timelines diverging, I just find it curious because I remember seeing that new editorial wanted the series concurrent with each other (thus the jumping forward of some DS9 stories for example) but now the Typhon Pact stories are a couple years ahead again of Voyager? Interesting.

Also, without really using spoilers, does this explain some roster change up of characters who are in both Children of the Storm and Magic? (I haven't fully finished Magic yet so I don't know if that certain character returns to the Voyager fleet)

On a side note, I found it interesting the number of characters "stolen" :) for Magic, one I think from Titan, one from VGR, and one from DS9 related stories.

Someone mentioned in another thread that Indistinguishable from Magic is the farthest ahead in the timeline ATM. There are some books that are part of the 24th Century arc next year that we don't know about the placement of yet though.

Not quite that far ahead. The most recent VGR novel, Children of the Storm, ends in late July 2381. As for Typhon Pact, it spans a fair amount of time. Rough Beasts of Empire covers Feb-Mar '81 and Oct. '81-Feb '82. Zero Sum Game and Seize the Fire are mostly in August '82, Paths of Disharmony is roughly Sep-Oct '82 (going by the age of Picard's son, who's just over a year old and would've been born in Sep '81 assuming full-term delivery), and the upcoming e-novella The Struggle Within is Nov '82. Indistinguishable from Magic is Jan-Apr '83.

Yes, there's plenty of intervening time to allow for the odd reassignment along the way.

But two of the three originated on TNG, and that was the impetus for including them in IFM.

I really enjoyed IFM and I wasn't really paying much attention to the timeline of events.

Now that you've brought it up I'm starting to see that the Typhon Pact is going to be around for the foreseeable future.

I'd really like to see some forward motion into Cardassian, Ferengi, & Dominion Politics though. Something Akin to the Khitomer Accords being expanded into a multifaceted alliance would be intriguing as well.

Hell, just keep writing more Nan Bacco scenes and I'll be happy.

next Federation President should be a rugby fan. or cricket. some other damn sport to spout stories and metaphors from...

Thanks for the answers and info, Christopher and others. Is there a thread on here that keeps track of the dates the books take place for future reference? I know there's one that has a list of book in the shared chronology, but I'm looking for one that simply has the dates. I have the big book from about five years back by Jeff Ayers, but I'm looking for dates for the recent books.

On a side note Christopher in case you feel neglected, Watching the Clock is next on my list after I finish Children of the Storm. :) I am a little over half way through Magic right now, starting into the second part of the book.

There's this website: http://sites.google.com/site/stvotitimeline/

The red entries are books that came out after VOTI was released. Unfortunately, the site hasn't been updated for over a year.

It only goes up to the 2381 books, but the timeline on Memory Beta is fairly thorough up to that point. Well, it does have the events for 2382, but not the books were those events happen.

My problem with Memory Beta's timeline is it doesn't tell you where you should read the book if you're reading them chronologically. (For example, VOTI had the books in bold where they should be read, and chapters that took place in other years were listed in a different size and font).

A lot of books over-lap one-another, though, so it's kind of a meaningless question. Unless you're willing to stop one book in the middle of it and jump back and forth to another book.

For the most part, when I have timeline issues, I stick the book where the majority of the plot takes place (and if the book doesn't say or indicate when it's taking place, I guess). If it's a chapter or two of flashback, I ignore those chapters when I'm trying to put it somewhere, while books that bounce around the timeline usually involve me figuring when the main characters consider 'their' time and try for around then.

The only books where this hasn't really worked is the Shatner Mirror Universe books, since they all continue on from one another and halfway through the middle one, there's a time jump. I just stick them all post-jump and call it a day.

Well, like, how would you shelve, say, Articles of the Federation, Titan: Orion's Hounds, The Next Generation: Resistance, Voyager: Full Circle, The Next Generation: Q & A, The Next Generation: Before Dishonor, Titan: Sword of Damocles, and The Next Generation: Greater Than the Sum?

They all take place at various points in 2380; Articles begins before and then finishes after most of them are set, and about half of Full Circle takes place in 2379-80 and another half in 2381.

Working on a new website that you two will be very interested in. Stay tuned.

I've started doing this, and I shelve by the beginning of plot. So Full Circle would be first, then Articles, and then the rest.
