Question for the editors about Trek XI

If Romulus does wind up being destroyed before Spock goes back in time, will that be in the Treklit continuity?
Just curious...

It's been posted regarding some other things in Countdown that 1) it's too far off to say for sure (20 years post-Nemesis, yes?), but 2) no, they don't necessarily consider themselves bound by it.

Also, since Trek XI clearly involves time travel, you can bet that series of events will be changed to something different by the end of the movie anyways.

It's been stated that the events of Countdown are meant to take place in 2387, only 8 years after NEM. That would be 6 years in the future of the 2009 novels. And the passage of time in the novels can be significantly slower than in real time. So I'd imagine it could be anywhere from 5-10 years, maybe more, before it becomes an issue.

Have the latest issues reconciled the inner chronological discrepancies, then?

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Would the editors really want to fit Countdown into the main continuity since B-4 becomes Data in the Countdown-verse? I thought they all decided this was a stupid way to go.

Well, the elements specific to Countdown aren't binding on the novels, but those elements of Countdown which are based on Spock and Nero's 24th-century backstory from the movie would probably be a different matter, since of course they'd be mentioned in the actual film itself.

Which would, if they are following the usual rules for the novels, mean they will take them into account.
It would be interesting if in a few years of novel continuity Romulus goes poof.
That would certainly throw a monkey wrench into the works.

Unless it gets mentioned in the movie, the books are free to ignore it, just as no one had to conform to Picard's new first officer, nor Wesley's posting to the Titan, as featured in the "Nemesis" novelization.

Nor do books have to acknowledge Lori Ciana (TMP novelization), Saavik's backstory (ST II novelization), nor Carol's relationship with one of her Genesis colleagues. Nor the actual surname of Admiral Bob in ST V ("Forged in Fire" vs ST V novelization): Robert Bennett vs Robert Caflisch
