Question About Working Out

I know very little about fitness so I thought I'd ask about this. Yesterday I worked out harder than normal, many of the muscles in my arms and legs are quite sore. I have heard that you aren't supposed to work out the same muscles two days in a row. Is this true? Should I take a break from working out today, wait until the soreness subsides? Or are you supposed to "push through" the soreness?

You need to give your muscles time to recover before you work them again. For larger muscle groups, like legs, this can be as long as a week.

Are you doing the exact same workout every day, or are you working different muscles on different days?

Well I just recently started actually working out my muscles, normally I just do some aerobic activity but I have started doing more leg and arm stuff. I haven't gotten in to a routine yet so I guess that's part of my question, if I should just do the same exercises every day or what. I didn't work out yesterday because I was too sore, which I expected since I haven't worked these muscles in so long. Just wondering what kind of pattern to get in to.

You definitely don't want to do the same thing every day. Think about how often you're going to be working out. You can split it up and do upper-body one day and lower-body the next day. Or you could split it up further and do something like Chest/Triceps, Back/Biceps, Legs and Shoulders over the course of 3 days. You can even split it up further if you want to come up with a 5 or 6-day routine. Figure out how many days per week you actually want to do weight-training.

Rest and diet are more important than the exercises being performed, so keep that in mind as well. Your muscles will never be able to reach their potential if you're not allowing them time to heal.

Thank you very much for the information. Didn't you say at some point that you wanted to be a personal trainer? You'd be good at it. :D

^Yeah you can't do the sme thing every day or you will hurt yourself. Not to mention neglect other muscle groups.

Today will be my third day in a row at the gym. Tuesday I did cardio (rainy so I couldn't go outside), I did core yesterday (I'm sore!), and will do upper body today (my weakest area).

You need to break it up and give your muscles time to recover.
