Question about the PS3

OK for the first time the other night I noticed when I turned the power on my PS3 via the power button on the front, it turned on my TV and changed it to the corresponding HDMI input, I also notice the HDMI input 3 named itself PS3.

I was like WTF? :wtf:

Is that a PS3 or a Blu-ray thing? I've never seen that before, The 360 doesn't do that.

I thought it was kinda cool. :techman:

I'm assuming you have a Sony TV? I'd be very surprised if this wasn't the case and you owned a Panasonic or Samsung or some other model.

Do you have the new PS3 slim model? Maybe they've updated the interface.

Yes I do.

I may have found why it's doing that.

Under settings, system settings, control for HDMI
It says "The system and devices connected via HDMI can operate each other". (on)

Not sure if this is a feature of the PS3 slim or if you guys can do it on any PS3. If you can it's a pretty cool feature.

Yeah the new PS3 slims come with Bravia Link which can in theory work with similar tech from other TV companies. It just depends on the implementation.

Yeah it was implemented roundabout firmware 3.0 for all PS3, but you will really need all your stuff to be compatible, my LG does not work with it at all even with simplelink turned on.

But nice little feature if it works for you.

Bravia Sync is really just a brand name for the Consumer Electronic Control part of the HDMI specification. Samsung call it Anynet, Panasonic call it Viera Link, Sharp call it Aquos Link etc.

I believe the standard is extensible so Sony can add features to a PS3 that only work with a Sony TV or Panasonic can have features that work between their TVs and Blu-Ray players etc, but there are basic features like the input naming one described here that are common.

Interesting, I bought a Panasonic Viera back at the beginning of Dec and I've never seen it do this, but I probably never got the settings set properly. I'll look into this when I get some time.

Come to think of it, I was messing around with my Viera remote the other day because I was trying to get the internet TV thing to come on, and my PS3 suddenly turned itself on. And I think I'd hit the Viera link button by mistake. So maybe I'm already connected, but I haven't quite seen the behaviour PKerr described.

Yeah, well.... my 360 made me breakfast and shovelled my driveway the other day.... BEAT THAT!

I have a Sharp TV, turning on the PS3 won't turn on the TV, but the TV does recognize the input as "PS3". It also said "Xbox360" before my roommate moved out.
