Question about Herb Solow

Maybe Harvey or someone knows the answer to this: Did Herbert F. Solow have any relatives also in show business?

I was watching an episode of the 50's Adventures of Superman series ("The Haunted Lighthouse"), and the writer credited was Eugene Solow (b. 1904, d. 1968). I looked Eugene up at IMDB, and among his credits were screenplays for Start Cheering (1938), and Of Mice and Men (1939), and a few televisions shows during the 50s and 60s, including Ben Casey. Was he any relation to Herb?

It seems like a good bet. A lot of Hollywood people get their foot in the door because of contacts available to them through a family member who made it.

On the other hand, I'm sure a lot people guessed that Star Trek composer Fred Steiner was related to the legendary Max Steiner (King Kong, Gone with the Wind), but as I understand it he was not.

I remember thinking that when I read Gene Roddenberry: The Last Conversation (1994), and saw it was written by Dr. Harrison Salow, but that was just a pen name for his wife, Yvonne

It's possible, but I don't know that many personal details about the man. Perhaps if his memoir, Going Solow ever comes out, it might say.

Thanks Harvey. The only thing I could find out from IMDB on Eugene was he was born in Massachusetts and died in London. And Herb and his wife moved to Wales sometime after his own studio career. It's likely more a coincidence than anything else trying to make it fit.

I don't have that book, and I can't find any reference to what you're saying about a Dr. Harrison Salow. The title is credited to Yvonne Fern at Amazon, and I'm not aware that Gene ever had a wife by that name.

I know I did....

I also thought I had read where Robert Justman was related to Joe Justman, who owned the General Service Studios where the first couple of seasons of I LOve Lucy were filmed....

^ Did you mean to repeat a post you'd made only an hour earlier?

^ Harrison apparently is Yvonne's middle or maiden name. The "Salow" appears to be a typo.

hmm...wonder if I meant to get out of bed this morning...so sorry, all, for the brain farts today...typos and repetitive posts...thank you, Melakon, for clarifying... :)

The double post may have been due to a board software glitch, is why I asked. If you go to a previous page through your browser instead of the board links, it can sometimes screw things up. A few months back, for a while we had a small epidemic of double posts usually right after each other, due to line dropouts after hitting enter.

MAN, do I appreciate knowing that...I am in the United Arab Emirates, where just about everything is blocked or controlled, and I was hoping I was not having trouble at this end...I would hate to lose you all and this forum...thanks for the heads-up! :techman:

^^ How is shooting the next Star Wars film coming along? :D

Please, don't tell us it is Tatooine, again...

Bob

Funny you should ask...they started shooting right here in Abu Dhabi a couple of weeks ago...about 60 clicks from where I live...the more adventurous of us went out in an attempt to sneak a peak, but the police protection is robust...one of the reasons they chose to shoot here, however, is a hefty 30% rebate on production costs...

^ Thanks, but that doesn't reveal anything that I've not seen mentioned at other sites. With Eugene Solow born in Massachusetts, I've been wondering if Herb is from the same area. I've found nothing on his birthplace.

I didn't realize you were looking for Herb Solow's birthplace.

For what it is worth, Herb graduated from Dartmouth...

Yeah, I found that too. It's possible he's originally from New England, but again, there's nothing specific.
