Quentin Tarantino

I really enjoyed Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown but never really got into his other films. I watched Once Upon a Time a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I then decided to watch the other films he made which I had not seen and I quite enjoyed them.

I respect Taranatino for referencing and bringing to the contemporary public classic films and music that would not have been noticed by them. However, I just find it hard to shake off this feeling that he is too hyped up by the trendy media.

I'm taking a break from watching movies and drama TV series at the moment in order to watch a few classic TV comedies that I've been meaning to watch. After that I'm planning to do a rewatch of Tarantino's movies to reevaluate them. in the meantime, I was just wondering what the people in this site think of his work?

I love his style in general, but he also has a self indulgent streak that can be a problem.

Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs are three of my favorite movies ever. His others I think are good-not-great. He has a unique way of deconstructing genre in a way that both respects and criticizes it. But he also thinks he's earned narrative shortcuts and makes it very clear.

I'm glad his revenge porn phase is over.

Thanks guys for replying.

As you mentioned JirinPanthosa, he respects the genres that influenced him but not afraid to show up it's flaws as well which raises his movies up from simple pastiches and fan-boi homages. I will get round to reappraising his films again in the near future.

I don't hate any of his films (well...maybe one, but it's a line-ball) but I also don't love very many of them. I'm almost always curious to see each film (and usually enjoy them well enough), though I rarely rush to see them.

I've enjoyed all of his movies and there was a time where I watched Jackie Brown like every time it was on, seriously don't know how many times I watched it. I even lamented when it started airing in proper widescreen as Bridget Fonda's posterior is serious truncated from the old 4:3 prints.

Speaking of alternate versions, one of the Japanese versions of Kill Bill has the scene with Go-Go and the Crazy 88s in full color which I think is so much better. As far as I know that's never been added to any of the US releases. But I digress.

I have a question about the latest movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, that maybe someone could answer. I understood the plot but I feel like the movie is trying to say something, convey some message or theme beyond the plot, but I'm missing it, I don't "get" it. Anyone have any ideas?
