Queen Elizabeth II HAS DIED.

It will be interesting to see if Charles III will command the same respect. I watched his speech, and think he handled it fairly well.

Interesting trivia... there were two prior Charles's, in the 1600's. One lost his head when Cromwell took over, and his son made a nearly miraculous escape from England afterward. When Cromwell died and his government fell apart, Charles II was invited to return.

I suppose Charles could have chosen a different regnal name if he felt that to be a problem.

Though I wouldn't have seen the necessity for that, or for that tradition in general. Not as long as someone's not named Adolf Satan Judas Stalin, or some such thing.

Perhaps a bit like when speaking about the Emperor in the present tense, it would usually be implied to be the Emperor of Japan, simply because he's the only Emperor currently alive.

It's not really the same. If I brought up "emperor" most people wouldn't have thought about the guy in Japan.

Not 'emperor' but "the Emperor".

If I said, out of the blue 'The Emperor is currently on a state visit in country <x>', about who else than the Japanese Emperor could I possibly be talking?

I would have only thought of this guy:

I just googled "The Emperor". He doesn't even show up in the first two pages. The emperor from Star Wars shows up on the second page.

Funny, I get him on the first page (though not the very first hit). I guess google takes search histories into account as well.

And I also do get the Star wars guy only on the 2nd page.

Weird. Most of the hits I got was Tarot Cards and some kind of book series, nothing that would be influenced by my search history.

I get those Tarot links too, then a link to a book titled "the Emperor", then three links to videos, then a link to the wikipedia article "emperor", then a link to the wikipedia article for "Japanese emperor" - all still on the first page.

Not sure how google ranks its results. Perhaps region is also taken into account.

Don't see why it would have been. The Restoration of the Monarchy is a celebrated event in British history.

Just watched the installation ceremony with the Royal Guard... I had actually forgotten that we borrowed the tune of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" from the British national anthem.

She's one of those figures, where her passing, despite how one feels about them, will be acutely felt due to how much impact she's held all over the world.

One of my buddies said that she was like 'the world's grandma.' I think he was onto something, there.

That's not so far off. She's been such a fixture for so long :)

I think it's going to take everyone a while to adjust to having a King.

I have to put this out there. Not that I am trying to brag in anyway, just been thinking of it all day. Years ago when I went to an Expo in Canada, Queen Elizabeth II was there. I can't say I talked to her, but she came over to talk with a lady right in front of me who was in a wheelchair and she asked her how she was doing. The lady didn't know who the Queen was. Because we were in Canada and at an Expo she thought she was someone else. I knew who she was and was so excited. I was really hung up on the royal family at the time in my life ( I was a teenager). So I said, that is Queen Elizabeth the 2nd! The Queen shook hands with the lady in front of me and her friend, and she smiled at me. I didn't take a picture because I thought it would not be the thing to do, and I might lose my camera or something. So it is just a memory that I have. :)
I am feeling very sad today. :(
I am not a fan of Charles, either, and don't think much of him being king. I am sure I am not alone in that.

To me, "emperor" brings up thoughts of either penguins or the Caesars.

I would have only thought of this guy:

To me 'The Emperor' is the guy in the Golden Throne from Warhammer 40K.

I didn't even know Japan still had an Emperor and neither could I tell you what he looks like. Totally different to Liz 2.
