Quasar may be joining the cast of "Avengers".

It's hard to imagine that they view the character as meriting or likely to get his own spin-off movie when they've cast such a little-known actor in the role. I mean, Robert Downey Jr, Sam Jackson, Chris Evans and ... who?

Okay, so Chris Hemsworth isn't Will Smith but at least Thor carries some name recognition. Quasar just reminds me of that game with lasers we used to play in the early 90s.

Ah, Quasar. Mark Gruenwald's attempt to create a Green Lantern for Marvel. (Shame that Grue never worked for DC) Still he was in some pretty good comics drawn by Byrne and Perez.

What do you guys think?
I'm not a reader of these particular comics, so Quasar doesn't mean anything to me. Also, I'm not familiar with Kevin Pennington, so I googled him.

Yum. Seriously, he brings the pretty. No idea if he can act (besides, Nathan Fillion's in it, so I'll be there), but I'll be watching Pennington, for sure.

Wow. Good thing Chris Evans already has his Captain America gig, because that Pennington guy looks damn perfect for it! :bolian:

Maybe too perfect, a bit Aryan-creepy given a WWII context? Let's compromise. He can be Warlock.

They are doing a Warlock movie someday, right?

Didn't Marvel kill off Wendel and give the bands to someone else?

Also, Wendel retrieved the Starbrand from the New Universe - adding more to his awesome.

^Yeah, he died during Annihilation, but a group of intrepid Quasar fans banded together and started a letter-writing campaign (including yours truly) and several of them ordered a cake to be delivered to Bill Rosemann of Marvel Comics.

CBR article on the subject here.

IGN confirms with Marvel that a press release adding model/actor Kevin Pennington to the cast as Agent Wendell Vaughn -- aka Quasar -- is "a fabrication."

Insert sadface here.

Thank you for your answer. :)

Seems to me that Quasar sounds like a nice guy, someone that I would like to meet in real life, but I'm not quite sure that being nice makes for compelling fictional characters.

Thats probably exactly why I liked the series. He's probably one of the few Marvel characters that doesn't come off as a douchebag more often than not.

I disagree. The fact that he was nice and was a pacifist made him an interesting read when contrasted against just about every other comic.

I don't know. The comics I read are full of pacifists and nice people, and none of them come off as bland as Quasar. And anyway, a work of art should stand on its own. If the main reason for liking a character is that all the other characters around him are two-dimensional jerks, maybe you should switch to a more challenging and more entertaining form of entertainment.

^ Like Star Trek?
Like whatever you want. Hey, I'm not telling you what you should read or watch, but maybe if you were reading Love & Rockets or Acme Novelty Library instead of Decimation or War of Kings, you wouldn't be so disappointed with the characters you're reading about.

I think it's pretty clear that not everyone finds Quasar to be a "bland" character, as you describe him, TMM. There was something about this character in the 90's that spoke to me (ah well, I was a pretty bland kid, so maybe there's something to your description, LOL). The "everyman" characteristics of him were appealing, and the growth of the character from naivete to wisdom, through the Gruenwald-written series, was a fun journey and to me echoed a lot of stuff that happens to people during adolescence.

I'm not trying to convince you to be a fan, just explaining my perspective as someone who likes him. Quasar is a divisive character as far as fans go. People generally love him or hate him, with a few milquetoast opinions scattered in between, and they are so entrenched in their feelings that debate never goes anywhere.

Quasar was just another under-the-radar and under-selling book for Marvel until one key moment. Quasar's death in the Cosmos in Collision storyline (one of Marvel's best cosmic stories, in my obviously biased opinion), where Maelstrom obtained the unremovable quantum bands by cutting off Wendell's hands, was re-used by Jim Starlin as the way he was "killed" by Thanos in the Infinity Gauntlet. And that's when the Quasar derision started. The character would not get a fair shake from creators for YEARS after that. He's also too powerful to leave on Earth, and so the character spends all his time in the obscurity of the cosmic titles, where the established icons like Adam Warlock and Silver Surfer present stars bright enough to drown out all others. Marvel made an effort to add Nova to the cosmic A-listers, and made him an interesting character to fans. They could do that with any character if they chose to do so. With Mark Gruenwald having passed away, there finally seem to be writers at Marvel who get that Quasar should be playing a key role out in the galaxy, and I love it.

Disappointed that Wendell won't be appearing as a pre-quantum bands SHIELD agent in the movie, but color me unsurprised. Ah well, there's always Avengers 2!

So, is he still dead? The article didn't say.

NM, wiki'd it.

Update:

The film (Avengers) is chock full of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (most wearing the standard black suit while others wear specialized outfits) with the most prominent given names from Marvel Comics mythology including: Alexander Goodwin Pierce, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wendell Vaughn, Jasper Sitwell, Clay Quartermain, Jack Truman, Abigail Brand, Larry Young & Jimmy Woo.

Personally, I'd rather see Mar-Vell before Quasar (actually, there are a lot of people I'd like to see before Quasar, even though I've got no particular animus against Wendell Vaughn).

The Death of Captain Marvel would be the weirdest superhero film ever made.

^ Weirdest...but epic too! Yeah I'd like to see Mar-Vell as well. I saw that earlier and thought it was very interesting. I think that link was posted in the Avengers discussion thread too. Interesting to see Abigail Brand's name in there, although given the director is Joss and he revised the script it's not surprising.

Just saw this thread and count me among those who was a big Quasar fan. I pretty much liked everything by Mark Gruenwald though.

I stopped reading comics around 1997 so I'm not familiar with his history past the cancellation of his monthly comic.

^ He's been featured in the Marvel Cosmic stuff they've done over the years. Teaming with Nova in the Annihilation Wave event.
