Quantum Mechanix Model of the USS Enterprise (new movie)

Hey guys. Long time lurker on these forums, but I've come onto something pretty cool that I wanted to share, so I thought I'd join and post about it and share it with all of you.

The model-makers Quantum Mechanix and the FX Company teamed up to reproduce the new "JJ-prise" (as it's so affectionately called here ), and through a bizarre twist of fate I'm the new proud owner. Though I personally am a fan of the new design, I realize that others are not. Regardless, this is a thing of beauty.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by it, actually. I'm not a collector of models like this, but even I am taken aback by having the Enterprise in my living room. It's hard not to get up close to it and recreate movie glamor shots as I move around to look at it from different angles.

The point of all this is that I'm pretty sure that I'm going to sell it, because it belongs in the hands of someone who can better take care of it and appreciate it even more than I do. I'm hoping that people like you guys, who have a bit more insight into all this, can give me some advice. I don't even know where to start!

So what do you think? Any suggestions?

Well... yes. But what I was really asking about is how I might determine its value in the first place. Or even, how I might go about finding its value. Who do I talk to? Where do I go? That sort of thing.

I'm not a collector, or a hobbyist. But I'm sure some here are, hence the dedicated forum. So that's the sort of advice I'm seeking, and if anyone has any insight, I'd be gratefully appreciative!

The Christies auction would be a good place to start. While this is not a hero model, those sold for tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars. If i were you I would contact the Sci Fi museum in Portland right away, that is where it should be.

is this a traditional "plastic" type model or metallic or maybe resin model... I have seen replicas of TOS Enterprise go for $1200... This ship is da bomb...it looks AWESOME!!!

22 Stars, though this is a first of its kind, it wasn't used in the movie so I don't think it's of that caliber. Though I wouldn't mind if it was! ;-P But I will definitely keep that in mind, thanks a lot!

Prometheus, I don't know what this is made of. Whatever it is, it's very sturdy. One thing I should do is contact Quantum Mechanix and ask them this very question. Thanks for that idea!

While I can hardly comment on the value of it... I'm extremely intrigued by the "strange set of circumstances" you mention, and would love to hear more about that.

As with all objects of this nature, the "true value" of it is defined solely by "how much does someone want it?"

Quality may seem to infer value, but that's not really true. A low-quality item which someone really wants will always be more valuable than a high-quality item nobody wants.

The ONLY way you can determine how much something like this is worth is to put it up for auction. The best way to get the maximum value from it is to do the sort of thing you've already done... that is, "document, document, document."

I seriously think that Ebay is the way to go. Since, as mentioned above, this model was never seen "onscreen," but is just a very-well-made one-of-a-kind replica, you certainly won't get "real filming miniature" prices, per the Christies auction.

However, at the moment this is about as close to having a "real filming miniature" model of this ship that anyone can get. If it were ME, I'd sell it on Ebay with a "reserve" of at least $2,000. If that doesn't happen... if nobody makes a single bid at that level... then you can repost it for, say, $1,500. I would NEVER sell this item for less than $800.00, under any circumstances... because I'm certain you can find someone who'll pay at least that much.

Basically, compare this to the "Master Replicas" model of the TOS Enterprise, and use that as your basic guide for "how much it's worth." That's what I'd do.

Then again, I really don't care for this design, so feel free to dismiss my suggestion.

You may want to contact places like, "Star Trek: The Experience" at Neonopolis in Las Vegas. Or Star Trek: The Exhibition. With the new movie being so popular, these places might be clamoring for related items.

Lol. Thanks for noticing the lens flares. I put that in as an homage to Abrams. That's about the extent of my photoshopping skills, sadly.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback Cary, and everyone else. This is so helpful to me! The only thing I'd say about comparing it to the Master Replica Enterprises is that at the moment this is the only one in existence (QM will be making more, though), and so I think that sets it apart from the others. But we'll see. Soon, I hope!

Dennis - the Enterprise is 34" long. I don't have the figures for height and width handy.

The ARG didn't receive much, if any coverage on Trekbbs (at least not that I saw) but quite a few people were involved and had a great time.

I took part in the beginning with the first barcode images, after that I was caught up with something else, but I did keep up with the summaries and hung around when the "rebels" were supposed to use the chat site or post new hints.
I was sort of disappointed at the end though ... kept hoping it would have a direct tie in with the movie and there being an alternate ending where Vulcan would be saved.
Shame you don't want to have a big honking Enterprise filling your living room
