Well, for the same reason he appeared in TNG. To help and guide humanity in its development, in his own unique way.

Much as I enjoyed the Q episodes superficially for their wit, there was a pretty big concept behind them (perhaps not so much the appearances in other franchises, but certainly in many of the TNG episodes).

Having said that, I don't think it would tie in with the direction. Would have LOVED to see Q-Squared as a film a decade or so ago, though...

And I never saw Q as a villain.
