Puppies!

Has anyone else had the opportunity to visit or watch puppies as they get bigger?

Those puppies are amazingly cute!

Yes, I've been able to watch puppies grow! Three days after Christmas in 1982 my childhood pet, a liver-spot Dalmatian, had a litter of 9 puppies. Yes NINE. The father was a mix of pointer and dobermann. 7 of the puppies were spotted and all of them had patches, and then two of them (curiously both the runt and the largest of the litter) were entirely black. We ended up keeping the big guy, my father called him Fat Albert, and sold the rest for $10 each, except for one that we gave to my grandmother.

As a kid, having a house full of puppies was a really great experience, and one of my favorite memories.

Here are a couple of pictures my father took, copies of which are still hanging in our veterinarian's office to this day. I remember that the one on the left in both pictures we called Curious George:

Unfortunately, I have no kittens of my own to post pics of. :(

Mine now lives at my parents' house and is 11 years old. THINKS she's a kitten on occasion, but still... ;)

Wow, they are adorable, all right. :) How did they like it outside? Did they try to explore, or stick close to their people?

Some of them were a little scared and stuck close to Mom, but a few wandered around a bit getting a feel for the big wide world.

Of course in a few weeks they'll run and stumble around the backyard like no ones business and not care where mom is at all.

Baby animals are so cute when they're seeing things for the first time. I love to watch cats going outside in the snow for the first time: "What am I stepping in?" :D

It's interesting how they react to snow depending on when they were born. If they were born in the late winter months by the time they are old enough to go out they never see it and don't really care for it. But our one dog who was born in October absolutely adored snow. It was his ultimate toy from childhood and every year he'd live outside if it snowed.

Damn, it's too bad you don't live around here. I've been thinking of purchasing a second Lab to go with my 100 lb beast of a chocolate. Got any yellow females you mind shipping to Mass.?

Someone needs a friend!

Poor puppy does need a friend, someone to help get into mischief with. Sadly all the yellows are male, and all but one of the blacks is female.

And the only black male has a white spot. Kinda weird how they color coded themselves like that.

She has to spend her birthday at the vet because she's been having trouble keeping anything down lately. But she's still pretty happy despite that.
