I don't remember the reason given for Pulaski's departure, although she was mentioned a few times after she left. Crusher attempted and failed Dr. Pulaski's mind-erase surgery on a Metokken (sp?) in "Who Watches the Watchers?"
...One might speculate that it was that very memory-wipe that dictated Pulaski's departure. Apparently, Beverly Crusher, a person deemed competent enough to be CMO to the Federation Flagship, never got that wipe right. Pulaski's unique skill would therefore probably attract the attention of the highest levels; she might be asked to specialize in therapies requiring partial amnesia - or enrolled to serve Starfleet Intelligence in shady tasks.

This is one of the only two possible explanations I can imagine, the other being that Crusher decided to step down as head of Starfleet Medical, to which Picard once again offered her the CMO post on board the ENT-D, or she requested it & was reassigned
Either is plausible. I tend to lean toward either Crusher or Picard wanting her back on board. He was certainly more comfortable with her, than Pulaski, & she fit better in the command structure for him, & her working there would definitely have advantages for her, over her Head of Starfleet Medical posting. I'd imagine she decided she really didn't want the new job, after a year, & once available, Picard ask her to return
Although, I am also willing to entertain the notion that Pulaski's skill drew her elswhere. Not only did she pioneer the memory engram erasing technique, but was also one of the more compotent surgeons who could perform both the ocular implant surgery she offered to Geordi, & the only capable surgeon available to perform Picard's artificial cardiac transplant.
However, this second theory suggests that the post was open for candidates, & either Crusher then decided to reclaim it, which is a bit less impressive than getting it back at will, or When the position became open, Picard went to Beverly & asked her to come back, which would be some royally suckass groveling
I've never had any doubt Pulaski was the better doctor, in fact maybe one of Starfleet's best. Crusher, on the other hand, had to have a specialist come in to deal with Worf's paralysis, & experimental though it was, succeeded in repairing him (Granted, he had 2 hearts)

pulaski was very crusty and denied life any enjoyment.she was very dry in all places and her sharp tongue reduced the staff into depression,including the cast.they voted her off as their performance was impaired by her crustiness.
Her connection to Starfleet would LIKELY have been a negitive to SI.

Picard didn't like Pulaski walking around acting like she was really the one in command. So Picard requested a new CMO search saying she doesn't support the command structure. Either that Worf and Data colaberated in a Murder operation and shoved her out of the airlock.
Ew.
I didn't mind her and I like the actress but she just wasn't Gates/Beverly to me!
And maybe she's in the holodeck and can't get out of a program!
To Dr. Pulaski: "Don't go away mad ... just go away."
She was kinda hot on TOS.
