PSN down thread

I think you're comparing apples and oranges here. Cracking the PS3 master key was useful for extending the system's functionality. It could be used for good or bad purposes, but I think people should have a fundamental right to alter software and hardware that they've purchased.

Breaking into Sony's network and stealing data? That's unequivocally "bad," no matter why someone did it. Sony should prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law.

No doubt. I was just saying that despite what happened before, that they'll even have more of a reason to sue for damages now than they did before. I mean, this time around they have a legitimate reason for suing, while before they were protecting their interests. It's like angering a bull or kicking a bee's nest. No good can come out of it. And you have to wonder what the hackers thought that would accomplish, because now Sony have an even bigger reason to be angry. That's the extent of my comparison. I'm not physically comparing the two.

Seems the guy who hacked Anonymous collected and posted all the members IP addresses...

...and their PM logs...

I really hope this helps Sony and the FBI make some heads roll.

It wouldn't suprise me if most of them never used proxies...
People can be smart and o so stupid at the same time...

Some more technical news:

One member of the Beyond3D forum, deathindustrial, was curious about the outdated server software claim and did a very brief amount of very interesting research into the issue....

(Beyond3D's community has a unique combination of technically knowledgable users with a low rate of console fanboyism, allowing for an honest discussion of things like the PSN data breach without the conversation devolving into another proxy battle in the great fanboy wars.)

As it turns out, it is fairly simple to use Google's webcache to show what version of Apache the PSN servers were using back in March. According to a page request archived by Google on March 23, 2011, at that time Sony was running version 2.2.17 of the software. You can see from Apache's website that 2.2.17 is the latest stable version of the webserver available even today. This is a direct repudiation of the claims being made that Sony's webservers were out of date by as much as five years.

I guess this whole incident shows how out of touch with gaming I've become. I consider myself and ardent gamer, but honestly, I couldn't care less if the PSN never came back, except that I know that would lead to fewer games on the PS3.

I just don't care about online gaming anymore.

Never buy it either.

Like I said, I know it would be a bad thing for the PS3 overall, because it seems more and more (if not most) gamers DO want online play. (I'm in the minority and I know it). And if they don't have online play, there will be less games developed for the PS3. Just a fact of life.

You keep going on about online gaming, when that is only one of the things PSN offers.

There's DLC, downloadable games (PS3/PSP/PS1/HD Remakes/Minis), Qriocity Music service, Netflix/Lovefilm, Playstation Home...

I know, and that's why I said I don't buy that stuff either. Can't tell you the last time I've been in PS Home and I don't even know what Qriocity is. That's why I don't really miss the PSN. Aside from the possible credit card and identity theft issues, this really has been a non-issue for me. I figure I'm a minority but I doubt I'm a minority of 1. I figure there are a least a few other gamers out there that are "meh" and life goes on.

For example, if the outage lasts into June, it won't stop me from picking up Infamous 2. It didn't stop me from playing Killzone. It is however stopping me from playing SOCOM online, and while that sucks, it's not the end of the world.

I guess all I'm saying is there is a gaming life beyond online gaming, and if the PSN went dark permanently, it wouldn't keep me from enjoying my favorite PS3 games. Same thing for XBL by the way.

Okay, I don't own a PS3 (or any console for that matter), but I have a GameStop rewards card so that my kids' DS games a little bit cheaper. Because of that, I'm on their email list, and I just had to laugh when today's email was advertising $100 off on their PS3 consoles!

Yeah apparently this whole deal is biting into their sales. I know my co-worker sent me some articles (quite possibly 100% BS) about how some Gamestops were not taking PS3 trade-ins any more and how people trading them in droves.

I don't know if I believe that or not, but for the sake of argument, let's assume it's true. And I'm thinking seriously? You're gonna take a big hit on a trade in because online is down?

Of course I will grant you, the outage has now turned out to be a LOT longer than anyone might have imagined. But still, seems a little drastic to me.

Yeah, that seems like a rather odd decision to make. One can still play games without having to be connected, like many single-player games, some that don't even have multi-player.

Another Sony update that hints about the return of some features of PSN, you would assume basic online play...

I know you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored. At this time, I can’t give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process.”

Take with a nuclear bomb grain of salt :p

I'm starting to feel like Sony is the Iraqi Information Minister. "Don't worry, everything's fine! We'll get things running in just a few days!"

If Comical Ali was in charge he'd be claiming that PSN never went down, and that the hack was a lie perpetuated by Western infidels.

Interesting article about how the outage might affect Sony's relationship with third party developers. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/...es-for-psn-outage-ars-explores-the-damage.ars
This is a story that not many developers wanted to talk about, and that's the real reason Sony won't have this bite them legally. No one wants to make an enemy out of one of the three companies that controls console game, and it's likely the agreement Sony signs with publishers includes language absolving it of responsibility for downtime. But publishers are losing money, and customers are taking note. Sony may have a harder time attracting online games and gamers in the future, and that's the real damage here. Whether or not Sony will be hurt in a real way will only be discovered once the servers are back up, and publishers again have the choice of where to put their games.

i have a feeling that five minutes after PSN is up and running, people will have forgotten this debacle.

there's probably going to be alot of complaining for at least the first half hour while playing online before everyone just decides to forget about it.
