PS5 Pro And Other Midgenerational Upgrades

And that price is crazy for a used game.

Yeah, it is, and it's the price before tax. We already pay high enough prices in Canada, and I expect used game prices there to go further up, just because they can, given the overall recent price hike of games.

I wish we had more used bookstores over here. We only have one in town. Everything else is dominated by the big corporate bookstore chain.

^^In 5 years time when the PS6 is only digital, and no other options are avalible to get PS6 games, wait till you see the prices of Ps games when the only place you can get them is via the PSN store, which of course is all part of Sony's long game, £150 for a PS6 digital, THEN season pass, dlc, microtransactions, loot boxes.........it is going to be a utter mess. lol

Yeah, it already is in a sense. Paying $100 CND for a title at launch for the basic version is nuts. Because that's the default price now these days, hovering around $90-$100 CND. I've already started wincing over the price and the only reason I bought BG3 was because I knew I'd get a lot of play out of it with friends. And the only way you can get a physical copy is by forking out $300 USD for a limited edition.

At this rate, all this will end up doing is having me stick with the PS5 for as long as I can.

Unless there are some big surprises waiting in the pipeline. I've heard comments that while Astrobot is generally a good game, it inadvertently only reinforces just how little has been done this generation by celebrating the past.

I have a funny feeling that the ps5 pro will be nothing but PS5 $80 remasters. Lol
GTA 6 and Ghost of Yotei are the main new games to look forward to.

What Sony has been doing is obvious. They release the PC port 2 years after it's been out on playstation which requires work in upgrading the console graphics and then they release a PS5 remaster based on that work. They started that strategy with the original Spider-Man and God of War. It makes sense from their perspective because it's cost effective to use those PC ports with some tweaks as PS5 remasters but it's led to a glut of remasters on PS5. Sony has just about run out of Ps4 titles worth remastering as well as IPs that PC gamers have been begging to play.

I think the hold up now has metric ton to do with the lack of independent houses pushing new IPs out. Bethesda was the big independent until Microsoft gobbled them up too. Console thrives on single player games but all devs want to do is figure out how to be the next live service game so they can feast on FIFA and GTAV Online level microtransactions. Why? Because in 2020 EA made 1.5 BILLION USD in FIFA microtransactions ALONE. GTA V Online made $551 million in the 3rd Q of 22 with Take-Two making 4.5 BILLION from GTA+ and NBA2k recurrent charges and microtransactions.

Any company that's publicly traded (and that's most devs now) is having to answer investors on why they're not doing the same amount. Single player games are being squeezed out. And while you do have games like Elden Ring that made about 1 Billion in profit it's not a recurring profit the same way live service games are.

You are not joking, i mean the pro is not out yet and all it seems to be bringing to the table at launch are enhanced and remastered ps5 games......nothing new............so well worth the 700 quid entry. Lol

I am going to predict through the next 12 months we will see more "remastered" pro games with 10/20 quid update costs.

And yet, live-service games aren't doing nearly as well as they should be. Probably due to the fact that the market is so saturated with them, and they're facing a similar situation that faced MMO's years ago. I mean, just look at how badly Sony misjudged things with Concord. Many new live-service games coming out inevitably fail for the same reasons and end up closing between months to a year from release.

Oh I agree but companies will keep chasing them because they're perfect revenue streams for publicly traded entities. Big profits and quarterly returns.

Don't forget the enhanced and remastered PS4 games. ;)

However, nobody was expecting anything different. Having PS5 Pro-exclusive games would just create market confusion. Nintendo saw how well that (didn't) work with the New Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U.

Any updates to PS5 games will be free. They'll only be charging if there wasn't a PS5 version previously (e.g. Horizon: Zero Dawn).

What I mean is, they're not as perfect a revenue stream that they think they are given the saturated market. Admiittedly, some of them will find that perfect sweet spot and make it work, others will crash and burn. And the sad thing is how much money Sony spent on Concord's development.

But I don't know if you've been following the Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown fiasco. That game had an early-access period full of bugs, then it was released in-full, full of bugs, preventing people from connecting and playing together. It was designed as a live-service game with social aspects, but now there are very few people online playing, with people feeling like it's DOA.

But didn't that game already receive a PS5 patch when the PS5 was released? I think that's what makes this remaster and the charging for it particularly bad.

They unlocked the framerate when running the PS4 version on PS5, but it wasn't a full-on PS5 version like Forbidden West got.

If it's anything like the slim, the other USB ports are in the back. The USB-C, which are used for charging, are in the front.

Btw, going back to live-service titles for a moment, the Playstation boss explains what went wrong with Concord, and pretty much said what I'd just said regarding the risk-reward:

And finally, live-service multiplayer games are just risky even if everything is done right....
“The PvP first person shooter genre is a competitive space that’s continuously evolving, and unfortunately, we did not hit our targets with this title,”

Oh, well at least it got that. Some games didn't.
I must admit i am enjoying all the, (how do i put this), supposed uninfluenced reviews, procliming 4k 120 fps is real this time, promise, cross my heart and hope to die, you can trust us..........which was all claimed last time by the same people who when asked for proof stated Sony said so and it is even on the box, 8k 4k/120hz....so going to be fun when 30 fps dynamic res games are still being released on pro versions, while pc gamers are sitting with rtx 4090s, rolling their eyes in a 'told you so' manner. Lol

I suspect the benefits will become more apparent as more games become enhanced. But I've seen some people test games that were supposedly 'enhanced' that they came away feeling less than impressed as you could tell when it was switching to performance over quality. Still, I think it will depend on how optimized these games are, and how much the new features will end up affecting them.

To me though, it just feels like a console in search of a problem.

Yeap, and the main problem this £700 console will encounter, just like the PS4 pro, are games still appearing on it with rollercoaster fps with dynamic res up the wazzo, because some gamers seem to be unaware that no matter how much power you have in your pc/ console, game devs and publishers are were the real power sit, as proven with the PS5 and XBX, which the vast majority of devs simply used the extra power to brute force their games to run at enough of a level to be able to throw out the door, and once the furore is over i expect the same thing on the pro.....but it will be interesting to watch.:bolian:
