PS3 Portal 2

Imagine a world were you could link your gaming devices together and use your games across those platforms.....imagine no more.....i give you portal 2 via steam works on the PS3.

Marking the debut of Steam functioning on any next generation console, the features shipping in the PS3 version of Portal 2 include cross platform play (PC/Mac vs. PS3) for multiplayer games, persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games, and cross platform chat (PC/Mac and PS3).

In addition, those who purchase Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 may unlock a Steam Play (PC & Mac) copy of Portal 2 at no additional cost by linking their PSN and Steam accounts.

"We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases."

"We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers," said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. "PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites."
What a brilliant idea, you buy Portal 2 on the PS3, link it to your Steam account and you also get it for the PC....and cross platform gaming. :)

I personally love Valve's business model; with this announcement even more so! The rest of developers and/or publishers want you to fork out more money for a different copy of a game, but that's how they get their money... but I really wish I could sell/trade my PC copies of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 (and DLC) now that I finally have an XBOX 360 and an HDTV. I would re-buy them, but it would be just a waste. But I'm not bashing Mass Effect, just that big evil corporate company we all loathe known as Electronic Arts. *sigh*

Only Valve would even consider doing something like this. I won't benefit from this since I only have a PC, but still, in an age where so man studios are treating every customer like criminals with overbearing DRM & content you have to buy separately, you have to give Valve credit for their loyalty to their customers.

...Now hurry up and finish Episode 3 dammit! ;)

I like the direction this is going, but it seems kind of "one way", i.e. in order to have both you have to buy the PS3 version and then port it to PC. Now let me know when I can buy it on PC and then play it on PS3, as PC is my main gaming rig for FPS and FPS style games. :)

That's ... never going to happen. Valve has to pay Sony for every instance of a game out there on PS3. On PC - the system of the free, the bold and the brave - there are of course no such fees.

^ Well, they just might bite the bullet because Valve intends to integrate the Steam platform onto the PS3. Shame we haven't heard more about the way they're going to implement it.

QFT. Not even so much as a peep about it for three years except one piece of "alleged" concept art. :(

At this point, I do wonder if they've just decided to up and turn it into Half-Life 3. Because if we end up waiting three years for a mere 5-10 hours of gameplay, a lot of people are going to be pissed.

Sony allows third parties to use any platform they wish. If Valve can port Steamworks to the PS3, you could see this happen with more games. Hell, the next CoD could potentially be a Steamworks game on PS3.

So Valve can set up the Steam store on PS3 and compete with PSN for revenue? I seriously doubt that.

Steam != Steamworks.

I mean, Gamespy is still used by a lot of devs on the PS3, but that doesn't mean they're selling Direct2Drives on there.

At best, this gets PS3 players to sign up for a Steam account on the PC to redeem their free copy of Portal 2 and it becomes another way for Valve to bump their total Steam numbers.

I mean, it's evil, but evil genius evil.
