Propose new aliens

Well, I wholeheartedly agree with Deimos. The only way stuff like this could make any sense whatsoever is that these aliens are in fact not pure energy, but that they are just from, and in, another (higher) spacial dimension we can not reach, or something, and the photonic, or whatever, energy we detect is just the only manifestation of them that passes into our dimension, like a radiation of some sort they emit into our space for whatever reason.

As much as matter without energy can't sustain life, neither can energy without matter sustain life.

Deimos, I think the Crystalline Entity would be a good counter-example that pure energy beings can have structure.

Well, no. You rebutted yourself actually. It's a crystalline entity made out of some form of crystal, which means atoms or molecules. Crystal does not equate energy.

Edited to add: Energy can have structure (just look at Earth's magnetic field as an example), but only because there is matter to give it structure. It's the same thing the other way around, if matter lost all it's energy, or in other words all the forces in the atoms and the molecules somehow magicaly stoped working, matter would lose all it's structure. They just can't give structure without each other.

Not so much a new alien, but a new concept for existing aliens. Many races -- Klingons, Cardassians, Gorn, etc -- would probably be more dynamic and interesting if they had genuinely alien motivations. At the moment, most Star Trek aliens are just vague reflections of human traits, adventure-world style charicatures. It would be so much more interesting if we assigned them motives that humans can barely understand, much less identify with.

For example, I have thought and continue to think to this day that the despite their claim to be "defending themselves from invaders," the Gorn originally attacked Cestus III just because they were hungry and had never eaten humans before. Luring Enterprise there wasn't a prelude to invasion so much as it was an attempt to get seconds. For the Gorn, it would be amusing if all future dealings with them carried the subtext that the Gorn are uber-carnivores who prefer their meals to be sentient.

Same again for the Klingons. They are one of the best developed trek races but still boil down to a charicature more often than not. It would serve them well to remove the last traces of humanlike emotional responses, especially when it comes to their favorite passtime of Combat: Klingons, being natural thrill seekers, would probably consider war to be more of a sporting event than a political one (despite the obvious political implications) in which case it is possible to get into a fight with a Klingon warship -- and even blow it to smitherines -- only to have someone on the High Council call you on subspace and say "Hey, congratulations on blowing up the IKS Klothos! Let us know next time you're in the sector, the Klothos' commanding officer has two sons who are game for a rematch."

And the next time we see a race of shapeshifters, I would hope they have something more interesting to do with themselves than conquer people and experiment with shapeshifting. Shapeshifters would be the ultimate method actors; their entire civilization would be based on trying to create perfect replicas of other people's cities and technology, possibly even to the point of reenacting their wars and attrocities as well as their triumphs. You could spin this as "we mirror your culture so we might better understand you" but more than that, it's the fact that a creature that can be anything has no reason to be itself.

Something like Zeff Cochrane's companion might be a interesting new crew member, a new Federation member. With unique strengths and weaknesses, just like the rest of us.

A idea I had years ago was, the Vulcan women have a pregnacy every seven years owing to female version of Pon Farr (so not Amanda), they send them into the desert for their age seven Kas Wan (sp?) because the adults want most of their children to die. Vulcan modern day version of population control.

:)

Have there been completely underwater aliens? It seems like an obvious one.
Also maybe a species with more than two sexes. Like one with sperm, one with eggs, and one that has a womb and carries the offspring.
I think the worst part of the whole bumpy-forehead alien thing is that when they had animation and the sky was the limit, the best they did was a guy with an extra arm. I mean, come on.

Andorians? They have four...

And there's that alien race with three sexes where Trip fucked up things...
