Promoting OC Fic?

For the most part, I write all OCs. I got my start writing Trek in RPGs, and the ones I've written at don't allow canon characters. I've written a tremendous volume of work, and I'd love to try and get other people to read it, but I feel like people are really hesitant to read fics that are entirely OCs. In addition to posting here, I also post at AO3 and Fanfiction.net. I've noticed other fandoms don't seem to be this way; I've done a ton of Dragonriders of Pern Fanfic, and it gets a tremendous audience.

I've had it suggested that I should write a few shorter pieces with my OCs and a canon character or two to increase interest, but I'm not really sure how I feel about that.

Those of you who primarily/exclusively write OCs, what are your strategies? Am I just sharing my writing in the wrong places? I seem to get a lot of views here, which is nice, but I like expanding my horizons.

I'm thinking this is a reference to Original Characters.

This is often a site for a lot of reads but not a lot of reviews (Fanfiction.net can be similar in that way). Try Ad Astra for reviews. But in any such place (and that includes here on Trek BBS), you need to be an engaging member of the community. E. g. read others' works and comment, that sort of thing, in order to be more likely (albeit not guaranteed) to get responses.

United Trek is a group that often posts here, and consists of several different and (mostly) original characters and storylines. In my experience writing and reading here, I would have to agree with Jespah in that people seem quite willing to read original works, as long as the favor is returned with honest, constructive feedback.

That's definitely something I'm working on as I have had an opportunity to start really reading some of these stories :-)

Agreed. The more reviews of others' work you give, the more feedback you yourself are likely to receive.

And many (if not most) of the writers both here and at Ad Astra write Original Character-based Star Trek.

Other than one guest appearance by Kirk, and some interaction with DTI agents Dulmer and Lucsly, my fic is all OCs. Unfortunately, I've not had time to write much at all lately, but many of my previous postings have been well-received.

Is there a reason why you stopped visiting the STPMA, Miss Adler? And all of my writing is original characters.

Yes; but not one that I would prefer to mention in public forum. I don't mind PMing you as you and I are acquainted, though. I just don't want my opinions besmirching an otherwise decent forum.

Or... you don't have PMs enabled. I added you on AIM; my AIM SN can be found under my avatar.

You're welcome to shoot me a PM. I don't use AIM right now. However, no explanation is necessary. I was just curious. Keep up the great work. I hope to see more soon, please. :bolian:
