Production Values TNG VS DS9

Neither show as camp very often: Camp: something that provides sophisticated, knowing amusement, as by virtue of its being artlessly mannered or stylized, self-consciously artificial and extravagant, or teasingly ingenuous and sentimental. Both shows played it 'straight' for the most part, as opposed to Batman which strived for camp-like perfection. There is a stark difference, and I wish people wouldn't throw the term 'camp' around without a clear understanding.

I think the lighting in GEN was due to the sets not being built for such a huge screen. Often when I look at photos of props from the shows I find myself wishing I had a better technical understanding of what the video camera lens does to make that piece of junk look "real".

Hence we have moodier lighting on the bridge, Data's quarters near pitch black, and Ten-Forward bathed in yellow. Note the Bolian waiter also had much finer make-up than on the shows...by the end all the Bolians looked like their make-up was put on with a spatula. And they all had that squarish inhuman bald cap they also use for Borg and any other bald species.

As to the SFX, GGI came into it's own during DS9's run giving it the benefit of more realistic shape shifting and the grand battles that wouldn't have been realistic or cost effective to do during TNG's run.
Actually, until Season 6, most of DS9's space battle footage was done with old-fashioned modelwork. For example, a bunch of the Klingon ships in Way of the Warrior were Hallmark Christmas ornaments.

The Enterprise-D looked great in Star Trek Generations. I wish the sets could have been lit a bit more artistically during TNG, although not quite as darkly as they were during GEN.

The lighting in GEN was horrible. But, then again, the Enterprise-D in GEN is still leaps and bounds above the Enterprise-E. I'm sorry, that ship is ugly.

I don't agree. I thought the lighting was top-notch in Generations. It was just such a huge departure from the way we were used to looking at those sets that it was jarring to see at first, and still jarring for some people. Had we not seven years of bright TV lighting, it would have seemed a lot more natural to us.

I have to admit to prejudice for the D and against the E as well. I wouldn't say the E is ugly, it's just a little too generic for my taste. Yes, the D's bridge looked like a hotel lobby, but that was part of its charm. It didn't look like the same ol' Trek bridge set.

And I like the wood paneling, dammit.

QFT.

I think the lighting was overall good in Gen, just, again, not what people expected. I just looked at the Ten Forward scene screencaps and they're not as bright as people claim...it's just brighter than the series did and has a golden glow from the star. The problem is, you're fighting 7 years of fan experience with the series. I remember the same kinds of complaints about the lighting in TMP v. TOS.
