Prodigy's Fate Sealed?

Though already mentioned in this forum's General Discussion thread, I figured something like this would be worthy of its own thread. The short version is, while Netflix shows no indication of picking Prodigy up for a third season or not, the Hageman brothers are now moving onto other projects which certainly doesn't bode well for Prodigy's future prospects. Article discussing the matter.

Much like the quickly-changed ending of DSC once it got cancelled (and that will probably also be the case with LDS), I felt that PRO’s ending was tacked on at the last minute and that if they had plans to continue the show, they wouldn’t have ended it by

fast-forwarding to the events of Children of Mars.

I thought PRO was the best show of the ‘five,’ and the one that I would have wanted to continue indefinitely. But CBS had other plans.

It's sad to see a Trek series end before its time, but at least it didn't end on a cliffhanger. In fact, the season two finale wrapped things up so well that if they'd told us that it was always intended to run for two seasons, I would've believed them.

I liked how how it ended. I can only hope the same for LD.

I like to think the spirit of the show will live on in SFA via the Doctor. Just one tale of the Starship Prodigy dear Doctor, that's all I ask.

Of course, there's always a chance of seeing a crewmember in live action via Newsome's comedy, if it ever becomes a thing.

I assumed season 2 was the ending. I'd have liked more but the writing was on the wall with the P+ cancellation. I'm very glad we got an excellent second season, and it wasn't buried forever as a hideous tax break.

Yes! Now that we've seen how good Prodigy season 2 was, it's even more obvious that pulling a Batgirl with it would've been a huge mistake.

I know, but its not a problem, most of the voice actors aren't kids. Ella Purnell could play an adult Gwyn. It's compatible with Newsome's vision of the show.

They managed to tell the story they wanted to tell over 40 episodes. If that's the end of Prodigy, then I can be satisfied with what we got.

I don't think it was tacked on. You can't really do last-minute in animation (lead times far too long), and the show was largely completed at the time it was decided not to stream it on P+.

Moreover, there were already building up to the events surrounding the Romulan supernova from the second half of season 1 on. Prodigy has always moved fast.

While it's a pity it very much looks like the show won't be continuing, I'm happy we got a great run and a very good ending. Few shows end on something that feels like a satisfying ending (even Voyager didn't!). I would have wanted to see more of Gwyn and Zero and co, but in a way their story feels complete.

Some form of continuation in the form of novels - preferably not (only) for children - could be an option, though there may be no interest for that.

I'm just glad they got to finish season two. It would have been a terrible waste to throw away all the work they'd already done.

Also I seem to recall while the first season was airing one of the writers, I don't remember if it was the Hagemans or Waltke or whoever said there was a plan to have Prodigy eventually sync up with Picard. The ending of S2 is consistent with that claim.

Well if that was the case, then the show was probably already meant to end after season 2.

The ending is open enough to continue, if there is money to do so. But the first 2 seasons were probably conceived to also work as the entire show, though.

I love the idea that the kids getting a ship of their own and heading off into a new adventure is, like, "What a definitive ending!" You know, like how when the same thing happened at the end of DSC season two, we never saw Pike and the Enterprise again.

Honestly, I feel like Netflix only picked up the show to "show it," not to make more episodes. There's already 40 episodes as is, and by Netflix standards, that's a complete run. I was hoping S2 would not end on a cliffhanger, because I never bought Netflix doing S3 as "likely." I would love to see S3, but if it doesn't happen, we DID get two "20 episode" seasons, and an ending of sorts. If the show is over, I dig the open-ending we got.

Given it's animated, so long as they save everything and can get the voice cast back, it's not like it can't come back later on.

I genuinely thought Discovery season 2's ending would have been a decent finale. How's it much different to the Enterprise's warping off on more adventures at the end of most episodes?

More would risk to be a repetition (if not handled carefully, as the Hageman's likely would but alternative showrunners might not) of similar beats (Dal again having to mature?) or to evolve into a next-next-generation. Why the latter would be fun, it wouldn't really be the original premise anymore.
