Prince's 3 New Albums

I've been a big Prince fan since I was 9 and saw Purple Rain in the theater. I even liked Under the Cherry Moon and I think Parade is a great album.

Looks like I'm making a Target run this Sunday. I'm interested in hearing his protege too.

Top 5:
Love 2 The 9s
I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man
Get Off
Life Can Be So Nice
Take Me With U

My favorite song from UNDER THE CHERRY MOON was the ballad at the end of the album; Sometimes It Snows In April..

Well I have 100s of Prince material because I was into collecting bootlegs of rehearsals, studio outtakes, and unauthorized recordings of live performances - anything I could get my hands on. An artist can be dynamic without abandoning their old trademark sound. When I hear some artist today from the 80s I immediately know its their work. Prince was dynamic enough that all his work did not have to sound like Erotic City as Purple Rain, Sign O' Times did not sound like versions of Erotic City but they did have something that immediately said "Prince." Like the first time I heard If I was your Girlfriend that falsetto voice and drums ran through a TC Electronics effects module gave hint to his signature music production sound. Cyndi Lauper made a point in changing her style because she can't sale in today's pop market, besides her fan base is much older than Prince's. Madonna is still doing popular music and each time she sounds a little bit of Like A Virgin and a little something new - mixing the old with the new under great producers. If you hear a Madonna song its recognizable (brandable) and yet new hanging in with the best and newest of them in pop music. Prince has not been able to substantially do that. He did jazz in the 80s - 90s with Mad House, rap in the 90s with NPG, Now every time you hear him someone is saying "He's bringing the old sound BACK" i.e., the sound we loved and got him here. Hence one of the new CDs titled MPLS (Minneapolis) Sound. What you intend with your CDs promotional marketing is really futile in the sense that If the fans hear it, love it, got to have it, it becomes a commercial sales success. If we count the songs released since since Sign O' Times the rate of sales success of individual songs per album, even from his own website, which I brought Crystal Ball, sales has declined - especially amongst new fans 14 - 21 years of age. Future Baby's Mama was a major hit for some. Its all a matter of personal taste. So unless this new CD reflects some of my childhood taste in Prince from "Prince For You 1978" - "Lovesexy 1988" I will not be into it. I'll buy it because I'm proud of my extensive collection. Believe me you will never know the karmic connection and love I feel for this man. I like to believe no one will be happier than I will to hear him being successful as measured by the 1978 - 88 sound. D'angelo - who he is rumored to have a collaboration CD in the making together to be released soon and Robin Thicke has copied his sound from the later falsetto slow song era and doing it better today than Prince today. Prince may have brought the best of him back. It was good to see him playing with the Fender telecaster and his old horner guitar being used by the other guitarist - I'm hopeful!

Wow, only 3 Prince fans here.

Ok I'm checking in now. I'm petty sure I've declared that I'm Prince fan in the previous threads we've had on him. Looking forward to this release after the 21 Nights book/ Indigo nights CD. The book was so-so and the CD is still in rotation on my iPod. I'll probably pass on the subscription and pick up the CD as well.

What you don't want to spend $77 for the 1986 Los Angeles, CA ticket? You will get a free T-shirt. LOL

I think what we are respectfully are trying to say is: "So what, we still enjoy what he has to put out."

Went to Target today and bought the albums. I was kind of worried because it felt like there was only one CD, but all three were there in the package. LotusFlow3r is probably my favorite of the three. I've listen to it twice so far and it's seems like it's going to be a long time favorite. Standout tracks right now are Dreamer, Boom, Colonized Mind, Crimson and Clover. Well, pretty much the whole album kicks ass. Also, wanted to mention this instrumental track called 77 Beverly Park. It has this Italian vibe to it which I really liked and is pretty different from things he's done in the past. The only song I wasn't really feeling was 4Ever, but that might grow on me over time.

MPLSound surprised me because I didn't think I'd like it as much, but it's also great. Chocolate Box is my favorite off that album.

And finally Bria Valente's album is pretty good too. She kind of sounds like Vanessa Williams.

Overall I'm really satisfied. :)

Yeah, me too.

I also think "Lotus Flower" is the best of the 3 but I love the jam's on MPLSoUND too, especially that 1999/Purple Rain vibed one "Dance 4 Me". I think that will please those wishing for his old school sound. "Chocolate Box" is a phat groove too. However, I think "U're Gonna C Me" & "Here" back to back slow down the flow before picking back up w/ the semi-sweet "Valentina".

"Lotus Flower" has the quirky playfulness of "The Rainbow Children" while combining the electricity of "The Gold Experance". It sounds more like Prince in concert than a studio recording. I'm blown away by "Love Like Jazz". "Dreamer" is a straight up Jimi Hendrix jam.

This will easily be one of my favorite's in his large body of work.

My only question is, where is "Turn Me Loose"? It was a song he premiered on an L.A. radio station about 4 months ago.

I was wondering about that too. Also, thought maybe PFUnk would be on there. The downloaded album has a song called The Morning After instead of Crimson and Clover. He must have changed his mind about Turn Me Loose. Maybe it will turn up on another album in a few years. U're Gonna C Me was originally on his piano album One Nite Alone and that now turned up here although with a different arrangement.

Understood.

I actually have "Turn Me Loose" downloaded from imeem.com but I figured it was also a preview song from this CD. I think PFUnk was only for website fans as a compensation for pulling his videos from YouTube & other fan sites. So I knew that wasn't going to be on it, now I just gotta download "The Morning After".

I'm just still in shock he's giving away so much music.
I'm still wondering if the record sales go to him or to Bria?

How does that work exactly? The sales would have to go to Prince I think. I mean two albums vs. one and that one he did most of the work on too.

No, true but I can also see Prince being generous with the profit too.

"No women, go makes yo own money!! Dis cheddar be mines!"

^ Thanks. :)

Chocolate Box has been stuck in my head along with a bunch of other cuts lately like No More Candy 4 U. Love the lyrics on that one and Valentina is about Salma Hayek's daughter. Really clever and funny stuff!

Is that who he's singing about?

Yep. :D I read that over on prince.org. IIRC she directed his Te Amo Corazon video a few years back.
No shit!

I just read in an interview Prince was talking about Bria's CD. He said: "We got tired of waiting for Sade to get back into the studio, so we decided to fill that gap."

^ Kept Woman definitely has a Sade vibe to it. Sounds a little like Smooth Operator.

I've seen some people say they think the raunchy Prince is back with these albums. For example the song Elixer could be "he licks her".

He gave away his last album in a Sunday Newspaper here in England. I probably have it knocking arouns somewhere is anybody wants it.
He is not my cup of tea but i would say he is talented.
...did they really make him out of the bits left over from Jacko?...
