Prince is dead

Damn, this is literally the first I've heard of it. I admit I'm not a HUGE Prince fan, I enjoy the greatest hits that you usually hear on the radio but never to the point that I've actually bought or downloaded any album. Although when I was a kid I did own the Batman soundtrack but I think it was a gift and I don't remember listening to it much. I've always been more of a rock and roll guy and a lot of his songs (the ones you hear on the radio at least) are more of the pop variety. Albeit really great pop, not bubblegum pop or anything. But as a guitar player I did come to respect his playing quite a bit after seeing him put on some pretty slick guitar displays in that George Harrison tribute and during the Super Bowl halftime show. It really surprised me because as an extremely casual "fan" I didn't think of him as a guitar player really. Since then I've been meaning to check out more of his stuff but never got around to it.

I wonder if he had what I did, I was really sick for just about the whole month of March, fever, pains, it was bad. They thought it was flu at first but it lasted so long. Ugh.

This is terrible news.

Not always a huge fan of his music or some of his eccentricities; but the guy was certainly a legend and he does have more than a few songs I like and enjoy. He was a pure entertainer and a musical legend up there with the likes of Michael Jackson.

RIP

What impressed me most about Prince was his sheer musical ability. Not necessarily his singing or songwriting, but his total mastery of just about every musical instrument that was put in front of him. Guitars, bass, drums, keys, you name it. He probably could play horns and woodwinds too.

Purple Rain and Sign O The Times are both in my top 50 albums ever. Now I'll never get to see him live.

We need to get all talented rock stars together and give them full body scans. This has got to stop.

If there is a God, I think we just proved he's compiling a supergroup.

I'd hve paid a lot of money to see Prince jamming with Lemmy !

I can't seem to get my head around this at all.

"Genius" is a word that's thrown about so casually and in reference to the most ridiculous things. Prince was someone for whom the word was actually inadequate.

Requiescat in pace.

:(

Just heard about this before coming on here, and my reaction echoed so many here: "Holy fucking crap...."

Devastated. That's how I feel. I've been a fan of Prince's since I was a little kid and first heard Little Red Corvette and all those other great songs he put out in the 80s. Then I became an even bigger fan in my twenties and on when I bought The Gold Experience. I was lucky to see him perform live in concert twice - 1998 and 2004. That second concert was the best concert I ever attended. Wish I saw him one more time. I can't believe he's gone. Never be another like him.

I'd add Alan Rickman to that group. He could sing when he needed to....truly, madly and deeply....to help the groups battle menaces no single singer could withstand.
Just saw him in two Texas videos the other day. He's like Leonard Cohen.

Texas - In Demand
Texas - Start a Family

As for Prince, been listening to this...

I never appreciated what a fan of his music I was until now, strangely enough. Loved his contribution to Tim Burton's original Batman. Additionally, one of my Mum's first CD's in the early 90's was a compilation of his greatest hits. I must have played it hundreds of times. My brother and myself were endlessly fascinated by 'Sexy MF'. As kids, we couldn't believe he was "allowed" to record something so profane.

I've been watching a few of his videos including the Superbowl performance and the George Harrison tribute. He was one hell of a talent. RIP.

Someone I know on Twitter wrote in January, JANUARY, "2016 is being written by George RR Martin."

Geez what a year :(

Well, this is a shocker. I was never a fan, but it's always a tragedy to see any talent die so young. And from the flu? That's just horrible.

RIP, Prince.

Quite a while ago, Kevin Smith worked with Prince, and he's talked about his experiences.

I am sorry to say I didn't get Prince in his '80s heyday, in my punky self-righteousness I thought anyone who dressed up and did dance moves onstage was a phony. I was in my 20s when some friends got me to concentrate on the music and, once I got into it, I was convinced. I thought the whole AFKAP thing was weird until I read up on the underlying issues, and then I realized it was kind of brilliant. I did not see him till 1997, and then unfortunately only one more time.

All the superlatives are deserved. He was magnetic and electric onstage, just unbelievable. When Prince recorded, every instrument in the studio was ready to go for him. The stuff he wrote and produced for other artists was legion. He was very private, and I can respect that, but on some level I would have like to know more about his work and artistic process. Bad, bad news.
