Preview--IDW's Star trek ongoing #1

There's also Things From Another World. I've never actually used it myself, but I first found it through Dark Horse's official site, so I'm thinking it should be fairly trustworthy.
I used to order stuff from TFAW all the time. They provide really good service, and they're easy to work with if you have any problems. I'd recommend them.

I second this. TFAW provides excellent customer service.

^That cover reminds me of the ones Jerome K. Moore used to do for DC and Malibu's Trek comics. Recognizably line art, but also very detailed and realistic, and often involving full-cast montages.

I would not be a huge fan of that as one of the things I liked least about TNG and Voyager was the tendency to use the main cast outside their main role e.g. Data for science (particularly exobiology) and engineering stories instead of having some science characters or Kim, Paris, and Neelix for geology instead of the ship's geologist.

Well, exobiology appears to have been one of Data's majors at the Academy, so that part at least would seem to make sense.

I thought there might be some kind of cute wink at the name Delta Vega being used for two different planets. Maybe in the next issue.

Yeah, I have no issue with Data being involved in exobiology plots; my issue is with his being used to the total exclusion of the ship's exobiologist or anybody else from the science department. The ship has 1000 people on board and Data is a walking computer - he may have a better knowledge of history than the ship's historian and better understanding of computers than the ship's computer expert but his job is the Operations Officer. I understand why in a TV show wants to use its main cast regularly but it was a minor irritant as I always find the main crew more interesting when they are interacting with guest crew. The episode where Wesley is put in charge of a team was quite good as it gave us some other crew as was the Voyager episode featuring the dodgy Maquis crew - it was just a shame that only Chell reappeared and then only years later.

I thought the same thing! God, I love those Jerome Moore covers...I always wanted to buy the original art for one of them, preferably one with a full cast shot.

Very quick issue #2 thoughts:

1. BOOO!! For inconstistent stardates! Issue #1 used used the new movie stardate method (2258.25/56?) and in issue #2 we're back to TOS style (1313.1)

2. Yay! For a comment about the two Delta Vegas!

3. Loved Kelso's awesome death!

4. Liked Spock's role in the story.

5. Dug the upgrades to the look of the universe (phaser rifle, etc.)

6. Enjoyed the flashbacks to the film

Overall, well done. Can't wait for next month!

Regarding issue #2: I found it interesting they used something to resolve the situation that had not been conceived of during the original episode. They made up for not having Sally Kellerman in the story in a clever way, I thought.

My original fears were pretty much realized, this felt like a badly truncated version of the original story. I felt they would need at least three issues to do the story justice.

Oh well.

I liked issue 2 more than I did issue 1. They took advantage of the new universe, I loved how Gary showed the past to Kirk. And they made an already powerful moment when Kirk takes down Gary, even more powerful.

I agree. I really enjoyed the issue, although overall, I feel that the pace was too fast. Three issues per story would feel right and would give them a chance to explore the supporting cast. The issue didn't feature every character from the movie, so at least they don't feel compelled to try and squeeze everybody into every story, however, I really missed Dr Dehner in this one. In fact, the sexism is more obvious, since no women are featured, except a few background characters in the Acadamy scene. It wouldn't have affected the story if a female security guard or Yeoman Rand had beamed down to the planet with them. The sooner they introduce Rand the better really; she would make a very good mobile heroine.

SPOILERS

Like in the movie, Kirk's planning was shambolic. There is no sign of a brilliant or even competent tactician here. Without Dehner's insight, Kirk doesn't know that Mitchell can exhaust his powers so he succeeds by dumb luck and because Spock disobeys his orders. However, I really enjoyed the angst at the end and the way that Mitchell's death oganically pushes him and Spock closer together as friends.

The franchise's potential is obvious at this stage but I really hope that they rethink the strategy of of two issue stories. And up the number of women asap!

Remember, we were told the stories may sometimes link in to the next movie. With the (seemingly unnecessary) romantic link between Dehner and McCoy suggested in issue #1, maybe this is a longterm teaser for the next movie?

It will be interesting if there is a female yeoman (Mears? Rand? the "B" cover art Andorian of issue #3?) in the shuttlecraft crew of next month's parallel story to "The Galileo Seven".

That's true. I also suspect that they won't feature in the comics characters that are going to feature in the movie until after those characters are cast.

I certainly hope that more than one woman ends up on the Galileo 7 and an Andorian would get a big thumbs up from me. I don't mind so if they jiggle the characters a bit to use recurring characters more often as long as the characters they use are qualified for the original role e.g. I wouldn't want to see Chekov taking over Boma the astrophycisist's role but I'd be happy if Sulu took over the pilot role or if Rand took over the yeoman role or if Mears recurred in the yeoman role outside the 'episode'. I would have really liked to see Helen Noel in Dehner's role (psychiatrist rather than psychic).

I'm going to try and keep using recurring characters where I can in my fan stories. How does a romance with Suzie Plakson grab Therin? ;)

Sadly, I'm sure IDW said that the Cover B recruitment poster doesn't relate to the internal story in #3.

Well, Suzie and I have worked together on stage. I have been her MC, and wrote her convention program mini-biography. And an anecdote about Suzie's visit Down Under, which I told to a songwriter, was turned into a song called "Lead Foot Suzie" and released on a CD. :techman:

I noticed that in the second issue, they reverted to using the classic series stardate system instead of the system used in the the 2009 movie. I'm wondering why they did that, unless it was just a mistake on the part of the writers.
